A single mother-to-be's brother refuses to financially support her, sparking outrage among thousands.
What are a sister's responsibilities? Controversial family drama gains popularity
A man's post about his family drama on social media has garnered thousands of reactions.
The man, 32 years old, stated on Reddit's AITA page that he has an older sister who has always desired to become a mother but has been unable to find the right partner.
"I suggested IVF treatment to her after years of waiting, and even helped her research the process and find clinics," wrote "sweet_thingg."
He shared that he loved the idea and decided to proceed with it, as stated in his post.
He stated that his sister possessed the financial resources to undergo IVF without assistance, but it required her to reduce her spending on indulgences and pleasures for an extended period.
Two months ago, he said that she got pregnant after her fourth round of treatment.
The man wrote that the entire family is happy for her, and she's happy too. However, she didn't anticipate the treatment to require so many rounds, resulting in a higher bill than she was prepared for.
The mom-to-be asked her family for "help so she wouldn’t have to make even more sacrifices."
Although she has enough money to sustain herself, she requested assistance from the family to avoid making additional sacrifices.
Our parents are retired and living on a fixed income, so they can't contribute much. As a result, I am her main source of potential financial support.
Last week, the man's sister asked him for money.
He stated that he has no problem with individuals choosing to be single parents if they can afford it. However, he believes it's unfair to ask others to finance such a personal choice, particularly when there are significant long-term financial commitments involved.
The man explained that he has a wife and a newborn son, and although they have some extra money, they are using it to maintain their comfort and save for a larger home.
He said they currently "live in a single-bedroom condo."
"She argued that family is supposed to support each other and that I'm being selfish and judgmental."
He stated that he informed his sister he would not contribute to paying her expenses.
This apparently did not go over well.
He wrote that his sister was both heartbroken and furious. She argued that family members should support one another and accused him of being selfish and judgmental. Their parents also expressed their disappointment, stating that he was not acting as a good brother. They believed he should assist her because she was family and this was her dream.
He added, "They're especially upset because it was my idea and I helped her research it."
He suggested that he would invite the sister to eat dinner with them nightly since she lives nearby and let her use his electric car, which is cheaper to run. However, she responded that it was not enough.
The man stated that he has his own family to consider and financial objectives to accomplish. He believes it is unjustifiable to put himself in a challenging financial situation for something that is the sister's personal decision, even if he had initially proposed it.
"She’s 34 years old! Does she understand what a budget is?"
He asked others if he was wrong for denying his sibling financial support.
The man added to his post that his sister is a homeowner and earns "slightly more money than I do. She can afford a child."
He said, "It's not that she didn't budget; she just doesn't like being frugal. Additionally, she accepted my offer to temporarily trade cars and eat dinner with my family nightly."
He stated, "IVF was not my initial recommendation. She refused to adopt because she yearned for a biological offspring."
He stated that he was not involved in her treatment or consultation, and he disagreed with her decision. However, he admitted that he had assisted her in researching it because he wanted to be a supportive brother.
A family issues psychologist was contacted by Planet Chronicle Digital for their insights.
Over 1,300 comments have been posted about the drama, which has garnered nearly 6,000 reactions from viewers.
Reddit users agreed that the man's decision and emotions were justified.
In the top "upvoted" comment, a Reddit user suggested that the sister could live with her parents.
Does she comprehend what a budget is? Does she have a job that can sustain two or more? A spacious enough home? Day care and babysitting arrangements?
What can your parents do to help this person figure out her new job in seven months? Can they offer child care or share a home to make it more affordable for everyone?
"You are still working on getting a bedroom for your own child!" was the response of this person after finishing.
Another commenter exclaimed, 'Wow, she's asking for money after making a big life decision that she knew would impact her finances. That's insane!'
