A rare coin designed by Benjamin Franklin was sold for a substantial amount after being discovered in an unexpected location.
Benjamin Franklin designed the 18th-century coin.
Recently, an auction house in the UK sold one of America's oldest coins for a substantial sum.
The coin discovered in a toffee tin was sold at Wotton Auction Rooms on Oct. 3.
The Continental Currency dollar minted in 1776, one of the earliest coins of the United States, was sold for 25,000 pounds, equivalent to over $32,000 American dollars.
The pewter coin's outer layer bears the inscription "Continental Currency 1776," which was created by Benjamin Franklin. The central image on the coin portrays the Sun and a sundial, accompanied by the words "Mind your business."
The coin was "discovered" in a tin with other trinkets, according to Wotton Auction Rooms' website.
The site describes this example as completely new to the market, as it was recently discovered in a local property and found in an old toffee tin containing a collection of jewellery, art, and oddities, which are believed to have been sealed and forgotten about for many years.
Joseph Trinder, an auctioneer, stated to SWNS that only 6,000 of the coins were minted initially. He predicts that approximately 100 1776 Continental dollars remain today.
He remarked that this coin represents a top five discovery in his career and is the kind of thing every auctioneer hopes to find.
The coin, recently shipped to the United States for authentication, was found to be genuine after a series of tests by experts.
In September, Trinder informed SWNS that the item was examined by a committee of specialists and underwent X-rays and other scientific tests, and they were thrilled to receive a notification stating its authenticity.
He remarked that it was unique to think that the coin, dating back to the year of America's independence, was found in the U.K.
