A century-old school is transformed into a dream home by a family in a chaotic 3-year renovation process.
In 1934, the school in Franklin, Indiana, was shut down and left unattended.
An old school in Indiana has been transformed into a forever home for a family through renovations.
In August 2021, after residing in New York City for a decade, Stacie Grissom and her husband Sean Wilson relocated to Franklin, Indiana.
Grissom informed SWNS that the couple was seeking a location close to their family where they could raise their two children, Arlo, three, and Margot, two.
Grissom discovered an old, abandoned school from 1914 while searching for unique homes with quirks, as shared on their family's social media account @schoolhousehomestead.
The family began renovating their newly purchased property to create their ideal home.
"Raising two kids and doing a renovation has made our lives very chaotic," she said.
The school was in rough shape when the family first purchased it.
Grissom said they had to strip the building down to its original bones.
She informed SWNS that a new roof was installed, the foundations were reinforced, and new windows were put in place.
The family undertook the installation of insulation, interior framing, and constructed a kitchen on their own.
Due to the pandemic supply backup, Grissom observed that supplies were arriving slowly.
"We underestimated how long things would take, and it took seven times longer than we initially anticipated."
In the past three years, the family has transformed the school into a spacious 4,000-square-foot residence featuring four bedrooms and two bathrooms.
Grissom stated that while most of the house has been renovated with new materials, they only refinished one of the classroom's pine wood floors and used second-hand items from old schools to decorate the home.
Grissom bought dining chairs from an old school in Slovenia to maintain the original purpose of the building.
Grissom stated that although the family is close to moving in, this is merely the start.
"We have numerous projects we wish to undertake, in addition to adding elements to our home that commemorate the school and include details that convey its story."
She expressed her excitement about celebrating Thanksgiving and Christmas in Indiana, by preparing large meals and sharing the state's beauty with others.
Over 882,000 Instagram followers have been gained by the family who shared their renovation process on social media through their account @schoolhousehomestead.
Planet Chronicle Digital reached out to them for further comment.
