A 125-pound prehistoric fish, measuring over 6 feet in length, was caught by Michigan officials.
A massive sturgeon was caught during the annual survey.
During its annual sturgeon survey, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (MDNR) recorded a new high in catches.
The staff of fisheries were on Lake St. Clair, collecting data, tagging, and releasing fish.
According to an MDNR post on Facebook, they discovered a monstrous lake sturgeon during their research.
The crew reeled in a 125-pound fish stretching over six feet long.
The "Heart of the Great Lakes," Lake St. Clair, has a surface area of 430 square miles and an average depth of 11 feet, as stated by the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy.
In the history of this survey, the crew's largest catch by length was hauled in and posted by the MDNR.
"As aging can be challenging, it's not surprising that some of these fish may be approaching 80 years old," stated the post.
Sturgeons in Lake Michigan usually measure between 4 to 6 feet and weigh between 30 to 80 pounds.
According to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, they have a lifespan of between 50 to 100 years.
The MDNR stated on Facebook that these activities give biologists and technicians information on lake sturgeon, which helps track their abundance, survival, movement, and habitat use.
The prehistoric fish have a shark-like tail and a bony, plate-armored covering.
The MDNR stated that sturgeon are a remarkable and distinctive species, and initiatives like this contribute to maintaining conservation efforts to ensure their survival.
Facebook users responded to the enormous catch by commenting on the post.
One woman exclaimed, "This week, my dad turns 80, and it's hard to believe that fish has been around since the 40s. That's incredible! I can only imagine the thoughts of that fish: 'Dang it, I've managed to evade the hook for 80 years!'"
I hope another person asked if we let him go.
An 80-year-old six-foot sturgeon, said one man.
"Amazing," commented a woman.
One man said, "Sounds like a fun job."
Planet Chronicle Digital reached out to the MDNR for additional comment.
