For one young fisherman, it seems that he is only beginning to set records.
A 12-year-old boy from Trout Creek, Montana, has set his first record by catching a large sucker last month.
With his father and apprentices from Waypoint Outfitters Inc., he caught the fish at his favorite, secret fishing spot in Noxin Rapids Reservoir.
Wade Merschat of Planet Chronicle Digital recounted seeing all of them swimming on the surface and up the falls before noticing one particular individual.
"I cast at it and had to get the perfect drift for it, resulting in catching him."
The young angler caught sight of the fish before pulling it in, but he was unaware of its true size.
Wade Merschat stated, "Although it appeared much smaller in the water, it was actually 10 times larger when I pulled it out, making me extremely happy."
Wade Merschat was determined to break a state record, so he meticulously studied different records and committed to memory the necessary weight and length measurements.
Wade's dad, Josh Merschat, told Planet Chronicle Digital that they frequently go fishing down there and caught some big ones. He is fixated on examining the state records.
"They knew instantly that it was the record."
The moment when Wade Merschat caught the record-breaking fish was captured on video.
"In the footage, he exclaimed, "I can't believe it's a state record!""
Wade and Josh Merschat discovered the nearest approved scale at Harvest Foods in Thompson Falls, just a few miles away, and also encountered a biologist from the Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks.
The fish tipped the scale at 6.72 pounds and measured 25.25 inches long.
In a few weeks, Wade Merschat received official notification that he had broken the state record.
Wade Merschat stated that after catching the fish and submitting it, he checked the website daily to look up his name and state record until he finally saw it in the record books.
When he was young, Wade Merschat discovered his passion for fishing and now fishes almost daily.
Josh Merschat stated that he is an avid fisherman and has been fishing since he was around 4 or 5 years old.
"He is fixated on it, which can drive me mad at times because he enjoys going there so frequently."
