Commercial telecommunication service providers in the U.S. were breached by PRC hackers, according to the FBI and CISA.

Agencies are proactively alerting other potential targets of elevated cyber activity after breached entities have been warned.

A joint release from government agencies on Wednesday revealed that the U.S. government's investigation into the PRC's targeting of commercial telecommunications infrastructure has uncovered a significant cyber espionage campaign.

The telecommunications companies' networks have been compromised by PRC-affiliated actors, resulting in the theft of customer call record data and private communications of a limited number of individuals involved in government or political activity, according to the agencies.

The PRC actors also obtained "certain information that was subject to U.S. law enforcement requests pursuant to court orders," according to the joint statement.

As the investigation progresses, our comprehension of these compromises will increase, the agencies stated.
