A Texas-based company, Venus Aerospace, is working on a revolutionary hypersonic jet known as the Stargazer, which could drastically reduce the travel time between New York City and London from seven hours to just under an hour.

This project seeks to transform long-distance travel and reshape the limits of commercial aviation.

Powering Stargazer to hypersonic heights

The VDR2, a 2,000lb Thrust Engine, is the core of the Stargazer's capabilities.

This advanced propulsion system integrates a rotating detonation rocket engine (RDRE) with a ramjet, enabling the engine to function seamlessly from takeoff to hypersonic speeds without intricate mechanical systems. The VDR2 is predicted to attain speeds of up to Mach 6, or 3,600 miles per hour, and fly at an altitude of 110,000 feet, providing passengers with a breathtaking view of the Earth's curvature. The aircraft is designed to cover a distance of 5,000 miles.

Navigating the path to hypersonic commercial flight

The prospect of hypersonic travel is thrilling, but there are several obstacles to overcome. The Stargazer, which is estimated to cost $33 million, will have a limited passenger capacity of 12. Additionally, there are potential problems with sonic booms over densely populated areas and regulatory hurdles in obtaining permission for commercial hypersonic flight. Despite these challenges, Venus Aerospace is working quickly to make their vision a reality. The Stargazer is projected to be available for commercial use in the 2030s.
