Biden administration surpasses Obama record for Federal Register regulations.
An expert says the new record highlights the growing influence of federal intervention.
No other president in history has filled the Federal Register with more pages of regulations than President Biden's administration, surpassing President Barack Obama's record.
The Biden administration has set a new federal record for the most Federal Register pages filled in a single year, with 96,088 pages as of Dec. 3. This puts the administration on track to surpass 100,000 pages by the end of its term.
In his final year of his second term, Obama set a record by filling 95,894 pages.
The National Archives and Records Administration, in collaboration with the Office of the Federal Register, produces and publishes the Federal Register, a daily compilation of new and modified federal regulations.
"The Competitive Enterprise Institute's fellow, Clyde Wayne Crews Jr., stated that federal register page counts are an inaccurate measure of regulatory burden. Despite this, Biden's milestone highlights the growing influence of the federal government. Crews emphasized that the 2024 Federal Register, with its record-breaking number of pages, serves as a stark reminder of the vast regulatory state, which is still expanding."
In 2017, the Federal Register saw its smallest number of pages added during President-elect Trump's first year in office, according to Crews. However, the fourth-largest number of pages was recorded in the final year of Trump's first term, which Crews attributed to efforts to eliminate rules and emergency COVID-19 pandemic measures.
In 2017, Trump issued Executive Order 13771, which initiated a new federal rulemaking process requiring that for every regulation added by the Trump administration, two must be taken away. As a result, Crews said, there were net cost savings throughout Trump's first term.
Trump has indicated that he will intensify his deregulation initiatives in his second term, by eliminating 10 existing regulations for every new one introduced.
The American Free Enterprise Chamber's Center for Legal Action at the Center for Legal Action at the American Free Enterprise Chamber of Commerce, directed by Machalagh Carr, stated on Planet Chronicle Digital that with the incoming Trump administration, a new day is dawning and help is on the way.
"The Biden administration has been attempting to stifle American entrepreneurship through excessive regulations and mandates for the past four years, according to Carr. The political appointees in the Biden administration hold a hostile perspective towards innovators and businesses that drive the economy, and they believe that the government should have complete control over these entities."
Neither the Biden nor the Trump camp responded to Planet Chronicle Digital's request for comment before the deadline for publication.
