TikToker and expert share insights on viral trend of using lemon juice for hair lightening.
Before sunbathing, individuals are seen in TikTok videos applying lemon juice to their hair.
A popular TikTok trend is spreading across the internet, featuring a single type of fruit.
Squeezing fresh lemon juice into hair is a popular hair hack on social media that promises a "natural" highlight.
A 26-year-old Bulgarian woman named Anastasia Vlakhova is a beauty enthusiast who shares life hacks on TikTok, including the lemon juice trend.
For more than 15 years, she has been utilizing this hack to save money at the hair salon, as she revealed to Planet Chronicle Digital.
""As a kid, I was told by my granny that I could use lemon to lighten my hair. I tried it out and was amazed at how effective it was," she said."
The TikTok creator with over two million views on her lemon juice hair video stated that she has never had her hair professionally bleached.
Instead, she merely uses the lemon juice hack.
To ensure safety, follow certain rules, she advised, as it's quick and easy.
To achieve natural hair highlights with lemon juice, one needs a lemon, a tablespoon of water, and a few drops of conditioner for a less acidic mixture.
She stated that she selects small sections of her hair, applies a lemon mixture to them, and then sits in the sun for at least an hour.
Vlakhova stated that she washes her hair with gentle shampoo and other hair care products like conditioners, a mask, or hair oil after spending time in the sun.
Preventing hair damage is crucial, as she added.
Lemon juice may not cause hair damage, but if someone's hair is already damaged or has darker or wavy hair, the results could be skewed, according to Vlakhova.
Thin Hair Thick CEO Tiffany Young, a certified trichologist, stated that the viral social media hack has both advantages and disadvantages.
She stated that one advantage of the product is that it can effectively lighten hair more efficiently for those who are new to coloring.
"Compared to hair bleach, lemon juice is a natural derivative and has less potential to overprocess or fry the hair," she said.
Coloring hair takes longer to lighten, and this slow process is generally more forgiving when someone is new to it.
One issue with this hack, according to Young, is that the lemon juice can make your hair feel dry.
Combining lemon juice with heat from the sun or a blow-dryer can dry out hair, resulting in frizz and stripping it of beneficial oils, she stated.
She continued, stating that it is not effective in lightening darker hair color and will not lift the hair to a predictable shade.
Be cautious of leftover lemon juice on the skin before sitting in the sun when attempting a highlight hack, as Vlakhova pointed out.
She warned that combining citric acid with sun exposure could result in skin burns.
It is always advised by doctors and other medical experts to apply sunblock to protect the skin before sun exposure.
