North Carolina mom who "depended" on daughter's iPad goes viral after quitting it abruptly.
Nearly 7 million views on TikTok show a child's first day without the device.
A mother who removed her child's Apple device is recording the aftermath on TikTok.
Recently, Stephany Faublas, a 34-year-old single mother, traded her daughter's 5-year-old iPad for educational activities.
The mother from Charlotte, North Carolina, observed that her daughter, Cadence Gray, was spending an excessive amount of time on screens, so she decided to abruptly stop it.
Faublas, who had a busy week working from home and trying to meet deadlines, couldn't give her much attention and relied on the iPad to substitute for his absence, as he told Planet Chronicle Digital.
To prepare her kindergarten student for school, Faublas decided to remove the iPad and replace it with letter practice.
"She decreased her iPad use drastically at the start of July and replaced screen time with letter practice, admitting that she was initially worried about her reaction. Screen time can be addictive, and switching to work comes with rebellion."
Her daughter's reaction was "full of positives," as Faublas stated.
She was willing to agree to it without resistance, as she stated.
Faublas was taken aback by her daughter's composed and accepting demeanor, prompting her to document the moment.
"Faublas said, "I wanted to record her excitement to start so I could remind her of it later if her enthusiasm waned.""
In a TikTok video with over 7 million views, Cadence is joyfully practicing her letter-writing skills.
"Three in a row. I can't be beat," Cadence says confidently as she practices writing the letter B.
Eliminating the iPad made her daughter's bold personality even more pronounced.
"Her confidence grew as we went along," she said.
She has always been confident and followed her own path.
Some TikTok users praised Cadence's abilities, with one commentator stating, "It's like she's running for class president."
She's not even in kindergarten? This is a grown woman. She is going to excel in school.
Stef Tousignant, a California-based parenting expert with a master's degree in applied positive psychology, emphasized the importance of screen-free time for young children in developing independence and creativity, according to Planet Chronicle Digital.
Tousignant emphasized the importance of engaging in non-school-related "playtime" activities away from screens for children.
These types of play, which do not require constant adult guidance, are crucial for development," she said. "Activities like dressing up, building with blocks, and drawing encourage creativity and problem-solving.
Social-emotional skills such as cooperation, listening, and effective communication are crucial in early childhood development and are often developed through playing with other children.
The community of adults on TikTok is made up of "internet aunties and teachers who are highly invested in her well-being, joy, and progress," according to Faublas.
As a single mom, Faublas feels less alone when she connects with online users.
"Their support makes me feel like we're all in this together," she said, as she was moved to tears by the thought of it.
The AAP advises parents to restrict screen time to one hour of high-quality programming per day for children aged 2 to 5, according to Mayo Clinic.
The AAP advises against media use for children under 2, except for video chatting.
"Ensure that digital media introduced to children aged 18 to 24 months is of high quality and minimize their exposure to solo media use."
