The gorilla in the park passed away on July 13 after undergoing "significant medical treatments for several age-related conditions."
Winston grappled with various health issues, including heart disease, joint degeneration, and kidney disease.
After careful consideration, the park ultimately decided to euthanize the gorilla due to his worsening conditions and resulting complications.
Staff at the San Diego Safari Park described Winston as "the best of us," according to an email to Planet Chronicle Digital.
A western lowland gorilla named Winston, who was born in the wild and later taken in by a private owner in England, was reported by TMX.
Since 1984, he has been recognized as a "patient, kind and compassionate troop leader" at the San Diego Zoo, as stated by TMX.
In 2021, Winston was one of the first great apes to receive treatment for COVID-19, and during this time, veterinarians discovered his heart disease.
The San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance stated in a press release that Winston will be cherished by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.

Most of the animal population resides in "isolated swamps and remote swampy forests of the Republic of Congo," although they are commonly associated with dense and remote rainforests in Africa.
Gorillas in the wild typically live for 30 to 40 years, while those in human care may reach their 50s. Fatou, the world's oldest gorilla, turned 67 in April, according to Guinness World Records.
