This cold and flu season, Dr. Nicole Saphier recommends these 5 foods to strengthen the immune system.
A doctor claims that red bell peppers contain twice the daily recommended amount of vitamin C.
During cold and flu season, one can maintain good health through various methods, including consuming specific foods.
On a Sunday episode of "Fox & Friends Weekend," Dr. Nicole Saphier, a Planet Chronicle medical contributor, discussed some foods that can strengthen the immune system.
""We must take precautions to avoid getting sick during the cold, flu, and COVID season, as once you contract the illness, there are limited options to alleviate symptoms," she stated."
Saphier suggests incorporating these immune boosters into your diet:
1. Red bell pepper
Saphier stated that one whole, raw, red bell pepper contains more than twice the daily recommended dose of vitamin C.
"Clearly, vitamin C benefits our immune system," she stated.
"Although grilling and boiling may slightly decrease the vitamin C content, the dish remains excellent as it contains other beneficial nutrients."
Saphier revealed that she typically serves sliced red bell peppers to her children "almost every morning before school."
2. Blueberries
Blueberries were characterized as a "superfood" and a "nature's powerhouse" by Saphier.
She stated that among all fruits and veggies, this one has the highest amount of antioxidants, low calories, and low sugar content.
"Grab a handful – it’s great for you."
3. Citrus
According to Saphier, citrus foods such as oranges and lemons are rich in vitamins.
People with diabetes should exercise caution when consuming citrus due to its higher sugar content, as warned by the doctor.
She advised caution when consuming pre-packaged, concentrated juice from the store, which often contains high levels of sugar.
According to Saphier, the best way to increase citrus intake is by consuming it raw or adding it to a juice that is rich in vitamins.
"She listed her preference for making a green version of smoothie with spinach, celery, turmeric, ginger, lemon, and other ingredients, stating that it is packed with vitamins."
4. Garlic
According to Saphier, garlic is "one of the best things for your immune system."
The doctor revealed that she consumes a juice made of liquid garlic, turmeric, and ginger to enhance her immune system.
"The best way to stay healthy during cold and flu season is to have a healthy body," she stated.
5. Walnuts
Saphier didn't mention walnuts for immune support, but she highlighted their advantages for brain and cognitive health.
She remarked that when observing walnuts, they resemble tiny brains, as people often say.

"I keep these in my hospital office for good health," she said. "It's important to keep both your body and brain healthy."
Saphier stated that organic options are the best way to avoid exposure to pesticides, hormones, and other additives, but they may be more expensive.
She added, "If only we could lower those prices to make them more affordable and accessible."
