For the 2024-2025 season, the FDA has approved updated COVID-19 vaccines from Moderna and Pfizer.

The FDA has approved Comirnaty and Spikevax for people aged 12 and above, while granting emergency authorization to Moderna and Pfizer-BioNTech vaccines for children aged 6 months to 11 years, as per an announcement released today.

The Omicron variant KP.2 strain of SARS-CoV-2 is targeted by monovalent (single) vaccines.

The FDA announced that these vaccines have been updated to enhance their effectiveness against COVID-19 variants.

The FDA's Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research director, Peter Marks, M.D., Ph.D., emphasized that vaccination remains the key to preventing COVID-19 in an announcement.

"The agency's stringent scientific requirements for safety, effectiveness, and manufacturing quality have been met by the updated vaccines."

"To better protect against currently circulating COVID-19 variants, we strongly recommend that eligible individuals receive an updated vaccine, as their immunity from previous exposure and prior vaccination has waned."

That includes women who are pregnant or breastfeeding.
