The demand for six-pack surgery is increasing among men, according to plastic surgeons.
Experts caution about the dangers of undergoing 'high-definition liposuction.'
High-definition liposuction is increasingly popular among men seeking six-pack abs, according to plastic surgeons.
The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) reports that an "ab-etching" technique is increasingly popular among men who struggle to lose stubborn belly fat through exercise alone.
The method aims to eliminate stubborn fat, similar to traditional liposuction, while simultaneously defining the stomach muscles to give the appearance of "chiseled" abs.
What is high-definition liposuction?
During an interview with Planet Chronicle Digital, Dr. Josef Hadeed, MD, a board-certified plastic surgeon at the Hadeed Plastic Surgery practice in Beverly Hills, California, and Miami, Florida, explained the procedure.
He stated that achieving a six-pack and V lines, as well as a more athletic and toned physique, is more similar to creating that physique through traditional liposuction.
According to the surgeon, traditional liposuction focuses on removing fat, volume, and bulk, but it does not address the specifics of the "underlying anatomy."
High-definition liposuction is more detailed, Hadeed said.
He suggested removing some fat from the vertical line above the belly button and the horizontal lines above it.
"To give the appearance of having a six-pack, we remove a bit more fat from specific areas."
The surgeon added that in some cases, fat is redistributed to other areas to create a bulkier, more muscular abdominal appearance.
A growing trend
According to ASPS members, there has been an increase in men undergoing liposuction.
Dr. Joubin Gabbay, MD, the medical director at Gabbay Plastic Surgery in Beverly Hills, California, stated to Planet Chronicle Digital that there has been a significant rise in high-definition liposuction requests from men.
"They are arriving with particular demands for a well-defined, angular shape."
More male patients are seeking to enhance their muscle definition, according to Dr. Finny George, MD, a board-certified plastic surgeon and partner at New York Plastic Surgical Group, a division of Long Island Plastic Surgical Group.
"It is becoming more socially acceptable for men to have plastic surgery."
George told Planet Chronicle Digital that there is a growing desire among men for alternate means of achieving an athletic physique due to two main reasons.
She stated that as society becomes more accepting of men having plastic surgery, many have attempted and failed with traditional diets and exercise.
High-definition liposuction isn’t the only procedure growing in popularity among men.
The number of cosmetic procedures among males has increased by 207% since 2019, as stated in the 2022 ASPS report.
The report stated that one reason men seek a more youthful appearance is to maintain career vitality.
The ASPS observed that male cosmetic surgery has become more acceptable for men due to the open dialogue about it initiated by social media influencers and male celebrities.
For quite some time now, it has been common in Brazil and South America, and it is gradually moving to the United States, as Hadeed told Planet Chronicle Digital.
What to know before seeking surgery
Before deciding to undergo high-definition liposuction, individuals should evaluate their motivations, advised Hadeed.
He advised against doing something solely because of pressure from a spouse or partner, and instead encouraged doing it for oneself.
To determine the best approach for achieving "perfect six-pack abs," Hadeed said, the surgeon will typically assess the individual's lifestyle habits, including their diet and exercise routine.
Perhaps this isn't suitable for you, as you are inactive and consume fast food daily, according to the doctor.
Hadeed advised patients to set realistic expectations for their fitness goals instead of striving to resemble a fitness model or social media influencer.
In certain circumstances, he stated, "we need to adjust our expectations slightly and acknowledge that I cannot transform you into a perfectly sculpted individual, but I can assist you in achieving a more refined version of yourself."
"Having elective surgery is a very major decision, and not something that people should take lightly."
Hadeed ensures that his patients maintain the results of their surgery by screening them for lifestyle habits and identifying any potential impact on weight gain or loss.
The significance of adhering to a proper routine was highlighted by Gabbay in relation to the advantages of surgery.
He stated to Planet Chronicle Digital that while the treatment is effective in achieving the six-pack look, it requires effort and upkeep to maintain.
He emphasized the importance of maintaining a healthy, active lifestyle and avoiding major weight fluctuations after the procedure.
"After a high-definition procedure, unintended weight gain can make the six-pack look less natural."
Potential risks
As chair of the Patient Safety Committee for the ASPS, Hadeed emphasized the importance of patients comprehending the risks associated with the procedure.
He emphasized that elective surgery is a significant decision that should not be taken lightly.
While the surgery is generally safe, there are risks involved, as Hadeed agreed.
""Skin necrosis and fat necrosis could occur, where some of the skin and fatty tissue dies, respectively," he cautioned."
Other potential complications may include blood clots and intestinal perforation.
Ensure that the plastic surgeon performing the procedure is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, Hadeed advised.
