Dr. Nicole Saphier offers 4 holiday nutrition tips: 'Everything in moderation'
A medical expert and Planet Chronicle contributor suggests that it is possible to celebrate the holidays in a healthy manner.
Last year, an Ohio State University survey found that two-thirds of people admit to overeating food during the holidays, while one-third confess to drinking more alcohol.
Dr. Nicole Saphier suggests that it is possible to enjoy the holidays while maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
In a conversation with Planet Chronicle Digital, the Planet Chronicle medical contributor revealed her top four tips for eating healthily during the season.
1. Cook at home
It’s best to cook at home whenever possible, Saphier said.
Research indicates that individuals who prepare meals at home are likely to possess a lower BMI and improved well-being.
She informed Planet Chronicle Digital that when you venture outside, you lose control over the oils, sugars, salts, and other additives in your food.
"If you cook your food at home using groceries, it will be healthier than restaurant meals."
2. Snack smart
Nearly a quarter of the calories consumed by U.S. adults are from snacks, according to previous research.
During the holidays, Saphier advises consuming nutrient-dense snacks.
Instead of snacking on potato chips, consider grabbing some superfoods like pistachios, blueberries, or other options that are beneficial for both your brain and body.
3. Steer clear of soda
Saphier considers water to be the optimal beverage choice.
She advised consuming as much water as possible while avoiding sugary beverages.
The doctor suggests unsweetened iced tea or herbal tea as alternatives for those who struggle with drinking plain water, without adding sugar packets.
Generally speaking, she stated that the lower the sugar content, the better.
Saphier advised avoiding all types of sodas.
"No matter the type, it's unhealthy and not allowed, especially during the holiday season, even if it's labeled as a "diet" option."
4. Limit or avoid alcohol
On average, Americans consume twice as much alcohol during holiday celebrations, according to research.
Saphier stated that there are many parties happening and advised everything should be done in moderation.
"You can have a cocktail if you socially drink, but be mindful of what you consume."
Saphier stated that while there are no positive benefits to drinking alcohol, there are "a lot of negatives."
"Not only does consuming alcohol harm the liver and increase the likelihood of cancer, but it also increases the risk of depression and leads to poor sleep habits."
The doctor cautioned that a lack of quality sleep can have a domino effect on various aspects of life.

"Not getting enough sleep can lead to a negative cycle the next day," she stated.
"If possible, abstaining from alcohol is advised."
