California declares state of emergency due to bird flu, as announced by Governor Newsom.
An outbreak of disease among dairy cows has been reported on farms in southern California.
Avian influenza, or bird flu, has prompted California Governor Gavin Newsom to declare a state of emergency.
An outbreak of the virus among dairy cows in Southern California farms has led to an emergency, as stated in the governor's website news release.
The bird flu, initially reported in Texas and Kansas in March, has now been confirmed in cattle across 16 U.S. states, as per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
No human cases of bird flu have been reported in California, as all infections have been linked to contact with infected cattle, according to a statement.
Governor Newsom stated that this proclamation is a specific measure to provide government agencies with the necessary resources and adaptability to promptly address the current outbreak.
He stated that they would continue to enhance California's testing and monitoring system, which is the largest in the country, in order to safeguard public health, support the agriculture sector, and provide Californians with accurate and current information.
"We will keep taking steps to prevent the spread of the virus, even though the risk to the public is low."
On Wednesday, a human patient in Louisiana was confirmed to have a severe case of bird flu, according to the CDC.
