A firefighter dons a Santa Claus costume to bring happiness to ill children: 'A source of hope'
A father of five from Virginia started by bringing joy to hospitalized children: "Bringing smiles to others is my pleasure."
David Saunders, 50, has found joy in moonlighting as Santa Claus during his holiday side hustle as a firefighter.
According to SWNS, playing Santa is more than just a tradition for Saunders, who is based in Fairfax County, Virginia. It's a deeply personal mission that's driven by a passion for spreading joy and inspired by family.
Sixteen years ago, Saunders, a married father of five, started a holiday gig. His son, who was then 6, had a frequent illness that required them to visit Children's Hospital in Delaware.
He would see all the really sick children every time we went, he told SWNS.
"He would depart and consistently express to me, 'I wish we could perform something kind for these children.' And I would respond, 'Determine what you want to accomplish, and we'll attempt to execute it.'"
An unexpected calling came to the father-son duo, who donned Santa and elf costumes to bring joy to young hospital patients.
Saunders performs around 100 to 150 home visits annually, in addition to commercials, ads, and Christmas movies.
He told SWNS that he genuinely enjoys bringing joy to others through making them happy and smiling.
Saunders has seen some children each year since they were infants.
""Watching them grow from a baby to adulthood has been a pleasure," he remarked."
"Despite doubts that they won't want you to return this year, their parents always call to say that they don't want to spend Christmas without you."
While playing Santa can often be delightful, Saunders admitted that it comes with its own difficulties.
He stated that he saw some truly ill or underprivileged children.
He continued, "It's difficult to view their circumstances because you simply desire to assist them in some way."
"Sometimes it’s taxing on you, sometimes mentally draining."
He wouldn't change anything, he said, and after 30 years as a firefighter, he is now looking to turn his side hustle into a full-time gig.
He stated that being a firefighter has been a rewarding career, despite the mentally and physically demanding nature of the job.
"As I age and experience physical discomfort, I believe it's time to transition. I hope my business can expand slightly."

The joy of Christmas continues to inspire Saunders to bring happiness to both children and adults.
"All children, including adults, desire something to believe in, particularly during Christmas."
