Weeks in blistering cold, Canadian hiker found alive.
On October 7th, Sam Benastick, 20, embarked on a 10-day camping trip with his family, but they grew concerned when he failed to communicate.
Earlier this week, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) located a hiker who had been missing for more than six weeks in the Canadian wilderness.
On Tuesday at approximately 11:30 a.m., the Northern Rockies RCMP were informed that Sam Benastick, 20, had been found. He had been reported missing by his family on Oct. 19.
On Oct. 7, Benastick embarked on a 10-day solo camping trip in harsh winter conditions, with temperatures dropping below 4 degrees Fahrenheit. His family became alarmed when he didn't check in.
Two travelers on their way to the Redfern Lake Trail spotted Benastick, who was using walking sticks and a cut-up sleeping bag for support and warmth, respectively.
The police confirmed Benastick as the missing camper after the men took him to the hospital.
He camped in the mountains for 10 to 15 days before moving down the valley and building a camp and shelter in a dried-out creek bed. He eventually flagged down two men.
The best possible outcome is finding Sam alive, as it was feared that he would not be found after he went missing for a long time, according to RCMP Cpl. Madonna Saunderson.
The agency expressed gratitude to various jurisdictions that offered mutual aid assistance during the search, as well as the Canadian Rangers and volunteers with extensive knowledge of the backcountry in the area.
Saunderson stated, "The time, effort, and resources invested in locating Sam after he was reported missing were immeasurable. We are grateful for the positive outcome."
His sister set up a GoFundMe after his disappearance to help cover expenses related to finding him.
