Russia's Medium-Range Oreshnik Ballistic Missile Was Launched, Confirms Putin

On Thursday, a U.S. official confirmed to Planet Chronicle Digital that Ukrainian authorities were informed about the "experimental Intermediate-range ballistic" attack on Dnipro by Russia.

On Thursday evening, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that the attack was a direct response to the U.S. and U.K. approving Ukraine's use of Western-supplied long-range missiles to target Russia.

The original report of an ICBM attack is unclear if it resulted in casualties, and if it would have been the first time such a weapon was used in war, causing global panic.

The Kremlin chief claimed that the weapon used in the strike poses a significant challenge for Western nations, while Putin and U.S. sources have confirmed that it was not an ICBM.

"Putin stated that the missiles attack targets at a speed of MACH 10, which is equivalent to 2.5 miles per second. He added that the current air defense systems and the missile defense systems developed by the Americans in Europe are unable to intercept such missiles."

The Oreshnik missile, which has been launched, is not yet verified if the U.S. or its NATO allies can defend against it.

One U.S. official believes that Putin may be exaggerating his capabilities in an attempt to intimidate the West and Ukraine.

The official stated to Planet Chronicle Digital that while they take all threats against Ukraine seriously, it is crucial to remember that Russia may only have a limited number of these experimental missiles. Despite numerous attacks from Russia, including those with larger warheads, Ukraine has remained resilient.

After President Biden's change in stance this week, allowing Ukraine to use U.S.-supplied long-range Army Tactical Missile Systems (ATACMS) against the Russian homeland, Kyiv promptly launched attacks on a Russian military arsenal in the Bryansk region, over 70 miles from the Ukrainian border.

U.S. satellites are still required for the sophisticated missiles to hit their target, despite Ukrainian troops officially firing them, as Putin mentioned in his unannounced speech on Thursday.

In response to NATO countries' aggressive actions against Russia, we are testing the Oreshnik missile systems in combat conditions. We will decide on the further deployment of intermediate-range and shorter-range missiles based on the actions of the U.S. and its satellites.

Putin declared that Russia would inform Ukrainian citizens of an impending attack, similar to the one carried out on Thursday, although it is uncertain if he gave a warning to Ukrainians residing in Dnipro.

The Ukrainian ministry of defense released images showing that civilian infrastructure was caught in the crossfire during the attack on the "defense industry," as stated by the Kremlin chief.

On Thursday, the Washington Post reported that Russia informed the U.S. of an impending attack, which aligns with information obtained by Planet Chronicle Digital. However, it is unclear if Moscow specified which Ukrainian city was the intended target.

The US has provided Ukraine with hundreds of additional Patriot and Advanced Medium-Range Air-to-Air Missiles to strengthen its air defense systems, as stated by a US official to Planet Chronicle Digital.
