Ukraine experiences another day of 'outrageous' and 'cowardly' missile attacks from Russia on civilian areas.
Narendra Modi of India has redoubled his efforts to achieve a peace agreement between Kyiv and Moscow.
Since Monday's missile strike by Russia, which was the largest attack since the start of the war, Ukraine is still struggling to cope. Now, Moscow is hinting that Ukraine may take drastic measures.
According to Rebekah Koffler, Russia's large-scale strikes on Ukraine's critical infrastructure on Monday were most likely a response to Ukraine's incursion into Kursk Oblast, which violated Russia's border.
"Koffler stated that Zelenskyy likely anticipated Russia's retaliation and accepted the risk, as he wants to stay in the fight and there is no other path for him personally or professionally."
"In order to continue the battle, Zelenskyy is requesting additional weapons and funding from the West," she stated. "Zelenskyy is likely seeking the removal of restrictions on the use of U.S.-provided weapons so that Ukrainian forces can strike targets deeper into Russian territory."
On Monday, Russia launched 100 missiles and 100 drones in response to Ukraine's incursion into the Kursk region, marking the first land invasion of Russia since World War II and the most significant setback for Russian President Vladimir Putin since his troops invaded Ukraine. The strikes caused significant damage to key energy infrastructure in 15 regions across the country, resulting in the deaths of five people and injuries to many others, as reported by French outlet Le Monde.
Western allies have imposed restrictions on Ukraine's use of weapons, according to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who claimed on his Telegram channel that this has hindered the country's ability to protect its citizens. He argued that if the air forces of Ukraine's European neighbors worked together with its F-16 fighters and anti-aircraft defenses, they could do much more to save lives.
On Monday night, Russia launched a second attack in the Zaporizhzhia region of Ukraine, killing at least two people. Ukraine employed F16s to shoot down five missiles and 60 drones, reducing the impact of the attack to approximately 20 projectiles.
President Biden condemned Russia's "outrageous" attacks and pledged to aid Ukraine's energy grid. British Foreign Secretary David Lammy mocked Russia for its "cowardly missile and drone attacks on civilian infrastructure."
Ukraine is preparing a list of long-range targets to strike if Western allies agree to Zelenskyy's request and allow defensive strike capabilities.
The ongoing Kursk invasion is intended to distract from other regions, particularly the Pokrovsk and Kurakhove sectors, according to Reuters.
According to Ukrainian General Oleksandr Syrskyi, Russia attempted to disrupt Ukraine's supply lines to those areas, but after the Kursk invasion, Moscow had to redeploy approximately 30,000 servicemen to the Kursk front, and this number is increasing.
During the Kursk operation, Ukraine captured 594 Russian servicemen and 100 settlements, and Syrskyi stated that Ukraine had rejected Russia's attempts to counterattack their advance.
Although Ukraine's efforts have been substantial, Koffler warned that they could ultimately harm Kyiv in the long run, as Russia aims to control attacks to prevent the U.S./NATO from deploying forces in the region.
"Koffler explained that while Kyiv tried to weaken the Russian forces, it also weakened its own, and the manpower ratio heavily favored Russia in the war of attrition."
"Putin aims to prevent Ukraine from launching future attacks on Russia and to persuade the West to cease supporting Kyiv, according to her. His goal is not a complete military triumph but the diminution of Ukraine's defensive and industrial capabilities, rendering it unfit for NATO and the West."
"Putin wants to end the war sooner rather than later, but only on his terms," she stated. "The crucial issue now is whether the Biden-Harris Administration will modify its policy, enabling Ukraine to be more assertive in challenging Russia's boundaries."
Efforts to achieve peace between Russia and Ukraine remain elusive, but European Union leaders, including Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, have made efforts to find a resolution to the conflict.
In the past week, Narendra Modi, the Indian Prime Minister, made an effort to reach a peace agreement. He met with Zelenskyy over the weekend and spoke with President Biden on Monday and Putin on Tuesday.
Modi, who traveled to Kyiv by train from Poland, emphasized to Zelenskyy that "both sides must work together to find solutions to the crisis," according to the BBC. Zelenskyy had expressed dissatisfaction two months ago when Modi was photographed hugging Putin during a meeting.
After both Ukraine and U.S. talks, Modi spoke with Putin over the phone on Tuesday. No details were provided about the topics discussed in the call.
