Two more Warhol prints were damaged during the getaway from a Dutch gallery after a "amateurish" heist in which the artist's stolen works were discovered.
Portraits stolen from Warhol's 1985 series 'Reigning Queens' were discovered.
On Friday, two rare screen prints by American pop artist Andy Warhol were stolen from an art gallery in the Netherlands by thieves who used explosives to blow open the doors.
Mark Peet Visser, owner of MPV Gallery, stated that the suspects left behind two more damaged works in the street as they escaped.
The Associated Press reported that Visser stated that the suspects tried to steal all four Warhol portraits from his 1985 "Reigning Queens" series, which depict Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom, Queen Margrethe II of Denmark, Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands, and Queen Ntombi Tfwala of Swaziland (now Eswatini).
The Associated Press interviewed Visser, who described the heist as amateurish and revealed that the entire event was recorded on security cameras.
The bomb attack was so violent that my entire building was destroyed, and nearby stores were also damaged. They did that part of it well, too well actually. And then they ran to the car with the artworks, but it turns out that they won't fit in the car.
Visser added that the works were ripped out of the frames and were damaged beyond repair, as it was impossible to remove them undamaged.
While the stolen portraits featured Queen Elizabeth II and Queen Margrethe II, the damaged portraits of Queen Beatrix and Queen Ntombi Tfwala remained on the street.
Visser refused to provide an estimate for the worth of the signed, numbered pieces he intended to exhibit as a collection at an upcoming Amsterdam art exhibition.
Forensic experts examined the destroyed gallery on Friday while police are actively investigating and appealing for witnesses in this case.
Planet Chronicle Digital did not receive an immediate response from Mark Peet Visser of the MPV Gallery when requested for comment.
