He told reporters during a press conference from his Mar-a-Lago club that he wants to meet with Putin and that they are setting it up. He also mentioned that he has had a lot of communication with President Xi and has many meetings set up with various people.
He stated that he would prefer to delay his inauguration until after the 20th.
"President Putin wants to meet," Trump stated. "We need to end that war."
Trump mentioned the high casualty rates suffered by both Russia and Ukraine and speculated that the number of civilian casualties may be significantly greater than what has been reported.
Russian news agency Tass reported on Friday that the Kremlin confirmed Trump's comments and stated its readiness to resolve issues through dialogue.
Gen. Keith Kellogg, the Trump-appointed special envoy for Ukraine and Russia, aims to end the conflict in Ukraine within 100 days of assuming his role.
Trump can end the war in the "near term," according to Kellogg, who described the conflict as "carnage."
On Thursday, the retired three-star general informed Planet Chronicle' "America Reports" that he and Trump are committed to ensuring that the cease-fire agreement is fair and equitable, although he did not specify how this would involve withdrawing Russian forces from Ukraine's internationally recognized borders.
Trump has not specified how he plans to end the ongoing conflict, but he has indicated that he might back Putin's request for Ukraine to be excluded from NATO membership, and stated that he can comprehend Putin's concern about NATO encroaching on his borders.
Prior to the invasion of Ukraine, Moscow had four NATO member nations on its borders: Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, and Poland. Finland joined NATO in 2023, applying for membership just three months after the Feb. 22, 2022 invasion.
Ukraine's NATO membership is a non-negotiable issue for Moscow and Kyiv.
It is uncertain if Trump and Xi will meet in person, as Trump did not specify a date for their meeting and Xi's plans remain unclear.
Beijing opted to send a top-level envoy to Trump's inauguration ceremony instead of Xi, as is customary.
In his last meeting with President Biden in November, Xi showed a willingness to cooperate with the future and outgoing president of the United States.
Trump, who previously stated that he and Xi had a good relationship, announced in late November that he would impose 60% tariffs on China. This week, he also mentioned the possibility of using military action to seize the Panama Canal, which the U.S. returned to Panama in 1979 before ending its partnership over control of the strategic thoroughfare in 1999.
