Trump could potentially end the war with decisiveness, according to Zelenskyy.
The third anniversary of the Russian invasion of Ukraine looms ahead.
On Thursday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed optimism in a televised interview and stated that he believes President-elect Donald Trump could be "resolute" in resolving the conflict as Kyiv prepares for the third anniversary of Russia's invasion.
According to a Reuters report, Zelenskyy stated that Trump's decisiveness is the most important thing for us, and his qualities are indeed present.
"He can be decisive in this war. He is capable of stopping Putin or, to put it more fairly, help us stop Putin," he added. "He is able to do this."
Trump promised Zelenskyy that Kyiv would be one of his first presidential visits after his inauguration this month as Ukraine works to secure its front lines.
Zelenskyy's top priority for the new year is to stop Russian advances early. Putin is reportedly afraid of negotiations as it would be seen as a Russian defeat by the Kremlin chief.
Although Russia has been fighting for nearly three years, it has not achieved its initial war objectives or even Putin's revised plans, which he announced last year, stating that his primary goal is to control all of Donbas, a region in eastern Ukraine that includes most of Donetsk and Luhansk.
Many leaders view potential peace negotiations with trepidation, not just Putin.
Zelenskyy has stated that he supports peace negotiations but only if Ukraine receives specific security assurances, including the possibility of joining NATO.
He stated that any security guarantees without the United States are weak, but he emphasized that Washington must consider Ukraine's future security.
""We are Ukraine, and it's our independence, our land, and our future," he emphasized."
Putin has stated that he will not agree to any cease-fire talks unless they include provisions that prevent Kyiv from joining NATO, which, under Article 5 of the alliance's treaty, would trigger an attack from all NATO nations and ensure a united strike on Moscow if it attacks Ukraine again.
Since 2019, Zelenskyy has been the country's leader and was asked if he would run for president again.
The Ukrainian president stated that the country cannot hold elections while in a state of war under the current constitution, but he may consider it once the conflict has ended.
"If I can do more than I am able, then I will view seeking re-election more positively. However, this is not an objective for me at the moment."
