The UN is concerned about its future with a potential second Trump presidency, as an employee's caught-on-camera revelation exposes.
What a UN junior staffer's comments suggest about the potential impact of a second Trump term on the world body.
A new focus is being placed on Trump's policy towards the U.N.'s scandal-ridden agencies due to a recent undercover video featuring a U.N. legal affairs employee stating the world body's fear of a Trump presidency.
The official from the U.N. Office of Legal Affairs was caught on camera saying, "I'm not sure the United Nations as an institution will survive a second term by Trump," in an undercover recording conducted by The Louder with Crowder podcast.
As president, Trump was seen as taking a tough stance on the U.N. by being aggressive in his posture against corruption, anti-Americanism, and antisemitism while promoting American interests. Despite not responding to requests for comment during the campaign, his actions as president spoke volumes about his views on the world body.
The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) lost funding from the Trump administration, which was reported by Planet Chronicle Digital in August. The U.N. had to dismiss nine UNRWA employees due to suspected involvement in the Hamas massacre on October 7, which resulted in the deaths of nearly 1,200 people in southern Israel, including over 30 Americans.
The U.N. Human Rights Council, the World Health Organization, UNESCO, and the Paris climate agreement are all organizations that Trump withdrew from.
The U.S. State Department spokesperson for Trump stated that the decision to withdraw from UNESCO was due to mounting arrears, the need for reform, and ongoing anti-Israel bias at the organization.
Biden promptly reentered the U.N. organizations, including the Paris climate agreement, which Trump had abandoned during his presidency. Nevertheless, Biden halted funding for UNRWA following its involvement in a Hamas terrorist attack, as exposed by Israel.
In 2021, Nikki Haley, the former Trump U.N. Ambassador, cautioned the White House against rejoining the Human Rights Council, as it is heavily influenced by communist totalitarian regimes such as China and Cuba.
At the time, Haley stated that if President Biden truly cared about human rights, he would keep us far away from the U.N. Human Rights Council.
A senior Republican Congressional staffer who specializes in international affairs stated to Planet Chronicle Digital that there are certain standard Republican positions that will be implemented immediately after President Trump returns to the White House, as well as policies from his first term that he will reintroduce.
The staffer stated that the administration will withdraw from anti-American and antisemitic organizations in the United Nations and instruct diplomats to push back against international policies that harm U.S. interests, rather than implementing them as the previous administration had done.
Stéphane Dujarric, the U.N. Secretary General's spokesperson, stated that Paoletti is not a senior U.N. official and was a junior staffer. He added that the comments were made in a private restaurant setting without knowledge and were not representative of the Organization.
He stated, "When someone is recorded without their knowledge in a private setting, I don't think any good journalist could interpret it as being the official position of the United Nations."
The U.N. has been accused by Anne Bayefsky, president of Human Rights Voices, of weighing in on the U.S. election against Trump. Bayefsky stated that the U.N. has forsaken its original purpose and is threatening American fundamental rights and freedoms. She added that one side of the American political spectrum tolerates America-bashing and Israel-hating under the guise of a phantom global messiah, while the other side gets it. Bayefsky also noted that the U.N. is afraid that Americans will get it too.
Bayefsky concluded that the U.N. has a mutual love affair with Democrats, as evidenced by Obama's decision to adopt the Iran deal before consulting Congress, the Obama-Harris-Biden administration's legitimization of the U.N. Human Rights Council, their support for UNRWA, and their use of the Security Council to condemn Israel while Trump rejected U.N. ploys to bypass American and Israeli sovereignty.
This month, the United Nations will hold its annual General Assembly debate, giving some of the world's most oppressive governments the chance to speak before the global community.
