The South Korean president imposes martial law in response to the opposition party.
The opposition party's actions, according to South Korea's president, pose a danger to the country's freedom.
On Tuesday, President Yoon Suk Yeol of South Korea announced martial law, claiming that the opposition was engaged in "unpatriotic" behavior.
Yoon stated in an unannounced address on YTN that he had no choice but to take drastic measures to safeguard South Korean freedoms and the constitutional order. He claimed that opposition parties have seized control of the parliamentary process, putting the country in a state of crisis.
Yoon declared martial law to safeguard the free Republic of Korea from the danger of North Korean communist forces, to eliminate the loathsome pro-North Korean anti-state forces that are undermining the freedom and joy of our people, and to uphold the free constitutional system.
He did not say in the address what specific measures would be taken.
