The number of fatalities from the recent German Christmas market attack has increased to six, as a woman who was injured in the attack has passed away.
On Monday, a 52-year-old woman, the victim of a Dec. 20 attack, died at a hospital from her injuries, as reported by The Associated Press.
A 50-year-old Saudi Arabian doctor was arrested immediately after driving a vehicle through a crowded holiday market in Magdeburg, injuring hundreds.
At the scene, five individuals lost their lives, while some of the injured were admitted to the hospital in a critical state.
The other victims, including a 9-year-old boy and four women aged 45, 52, 67, and 75, were also killed.
The suspect, who arrived in Germany in 2006 and has been a permanent resident of the country, was involved in an attack.
The Associated Press reports that the suspect doesn't fit the typical profile of perpetrators of extremist attacks, despite the initial description of the attack as a suspected act of terrorism.
He claimed to be an ex-Muslim and criticized Islam on social media while expressing support for the far right.
Last month, German Justice Minister Volker Wissing stated to the Funke newspaper group that the Magdeburg perpetrator had repeatedly drawn attention by making threats, but despite warnings, his political statements were so confusing that none of the security authorities' patterns matched him, according to what is currently known.
In the aftermath of the attack, people laid tributes at the market site, including flowers, stuffed animals, candles, and other mementos, in honor of the fallen victims.
