The discovery of a luxurious private bath complex in Pompeii showcases the opulence and grandeur of the ancient Roman city prior to its destruction by Mount Vesuvius in AD 79, as stated on Friday.
Up to 30 guests could relax in the baths, which have hot, warm, and cold rooms, before entering the black-walled banquet hall adorned with Greek mythology scenes.
The grand residence, uncovered during excavations, has revealed the opulent city's multifaceted social life before Vesuvius buried it under a thick, suffocating blanket of ash.
The house, believed to have belonged to a member of Pompeii's elite in its final years, boasts a central courtyard with a large basin, enhancing its grandeur.
According to Gabriel Zuchtriegel, director of the Pompeii Archaeological Park, this discovery highlights the fact that Roman houses served as more than just private homes; they were also venues for public life and self-promotion.
The layout reminded Zuchtriegel of "The Satyricon" by the Romans, where wealth and status were showcased through banquets and baths.
The complex, adorned with frescoes, draws inspiration from Greek culture and emphasizes themes of leisure and erudition.
Zuchtriegel stated that the homeowner aimed to make a statement by turning their home into a Greek-style palace and gymnasium.
During excavations in Pompeii, over 1,000 victim remains were discovered, including two bodies inside a private residence with a bathhouse - a woman aged 35-50 clinging to jewellery and coins, and a younger man.
The discovery of their bodies was announced last year.
