The cease-fire deal in Israel has raised concerns among critics about the potential impact on the Biden and Obama administrations' efforts to hinder the incoming Trump administration.
Sen. Ted Cruz expresses concern over reports of Obama-Biden officials pressuring Israeli allies to accept cease-fire.
Some leading Republican lawmakers accused President Biden of pressuring Israel into a temporary cease-fire with the Iranian regime-backed Hezbollah terrorist movement in Lebanon, as Israel staged a near-take down of the terror group's leadership and military structure.
On Tuesday, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) reached the Litani River in Lebanon, a key war goal being to push Hezbollah forces north of the river. Under the cease-fire deal, Hezbollah is required to move its forces north of the Litani, which is approximately 30 kilometers (20 miles) north of the border.
According to regional experts and several lawmakers, the reported threat of Biden imposing a weapons embargo on Israel halted Israel's infiltration of Hezbollah-controlled territory in southern Lebanon.
Despite the cease-fire agreement, Israel was able to accomplish a great deal against Hezbollah in a short amount of time. In just two months, it destroyed its infrastructure, killed and injured thousands of its fighters, and decapitated its entire senior command structure.
The Obama-Biden team coerced the Israelis into signing onto Obama's vision for the U.S. role in Lebanon, which is part of his broader pro-Iran realignment, reportedly with the threat of an arms embargo at the Security Council. This move consolidates the Obama framework that should have been dismantled, and it is separate from the tactical and strategic gains that Israel achieved on the battlefield. Instead, this pertains to U.S. policy and how the Obama-Biden team used Israel to lock in their regional preferences.
The deal places the incoming Trump administration and Israel in a difficult position. Not only does it require the new administration to uphold Obama's preferences in Lebanon, including additional aid to the Lebanese Armed Forces, but it also makes the U.S. responsible for resolving disputes between Israel and Hezbollah. This may lead to tension between the Trump administration and Israel.
The Obama-Biden team has established their structure, and if the incoming administration maintains it, it will benefit the Democrats. They have a bilateral side agreement that will be available for a future Democratic administration.
Amos Hochstein, the presidential envoy who facilitated the agreement, disclosed to Yonit Levi of Israel's Channel 12 evening news that he had conveyed the deal's principles to President-elect Donald Trump's team. He emphasized the importance of their comprehension and support of the deal, as they would be responsible for executing it after taking office in the near future.
Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, echoed Badran's warning, stating that he is deeply concerned about reports that Obama-Biden officials pressured Israel's allies to accept a cease-fire and how those officials are characterizing Israel's obligations. This pressure and these statements are attempts to undermine Israel and limit the incoming Trump administration's ability to defend itself. Obama-Biden officials pressured Israel's allies into accepting the cease-fire by withholding weapons they needed to defend themselves and counter Hezbollah, and by threatening to facilitate a broader, binding international arms embargo through the United Nations.
Nearly 1,200 people were killed in southern Israel a day after Hezbollah launched rocket attacks in response to the Hamas massacre of over 40 Americans during the invasion.
According to Haaretz, Netanyahu's aides claimed that Biden threatened to halt weapons deliveries to Israel if it continued to fight in Lebanon. Additionally, the second threat from Biden was reportedly a U.S. refusal to veto a potential U.N. Security Council resolution that would harm the Israelis.
The Biden administration has denied any punitive measures against Israel to achieve a cease-fire in Lebanon. During a Tuesday press briefing, a senior official stated that the topic of sanctioning Israel was never discussed and that the administration did not threaten it. The official added that the topic was completely new to them and none of them had heard of it before.
In an interview with Israel's Ch. 12, Hochstein denied that the Biden administration threatened Israel over its use of its U.N. Security Council veto if it did not sign the deal. He stated, "There was no such discussion at any point," and added, "it never came up."
The U.S. State Department did not promptly reply to a Planet Chronicle Digital inquiry.
The United States' carrot-and-stick approach to providing weapons to Israel during its seven-front war against Iranian proxies has caused tension with Netanyahu.
Lt. Col. (Res.) Sarit Zehavi, the president and founder of the Israel-based Alma Research and Education Center, stated to Planet Chronicle Digital that the IDF eliminated Hezbollah leadership, most of its rockets were eradicated, and it was pushed away from the border. She added, "The big question at stake remains: will Hezbollah recover and smuggle rockets and store them in Lebanon and south Lebanon again?"
Zehavi replied, "I believe this deal will not happen."
Hezbollah is considered a terrorist organization by the U.S., Canada, and many European countries, but Lebanese experts argue that it effectively governs Lebanon.
Hezbollah is a member of the Lebanese government, and the Lebanese government is not willing to alter its relationship with Hezbollah.
The United Nations Interim Force In Lebanon (UNIFIL), the Lebanese armed forces, and the Lebanese state are expected to enforce the terms of the cease-fire, as stated by her.
The Lebanese government must cease smuggling weapons to Hezbollah, as per the cease-fire agreement, Zehavi stated.
"I am ambivalent about this cease-fire. Although I am a resident of the north and happy that we have a cease-fire, I am also relieved that my daughter can return to school and that we can return to normalcy. I am relieved to be free from the constant sounds of war and the need to seek shelter."
Local leaders in northern towns affected by Hezbollah's missile attacks opposed the cease-fire agreement as the terms did not guarantee their safety in their homes.
Over 70,000 Israelis were displaced from their homes in northern Israel due to Hezbollah's rocket attacks, according to experts in Israel.
According to UNIFIL spokesman Andrea Tenenti, the proliferation of weapons outside state control in Lebanon is a fact, and the presence of weapons in south Lebanon, south of the Litani River, is a violation of Resolution 1701. However, UNIFIL is not authorized to disarm Hezbollah or other groups by force. The Mission does not have the mandate to enter any location unless there is evidence of hostile activity taking place there.
The alleged failures of UNSC 1701, which aims to remove Hezbollah from southern Lebanon and disarm the terrorist group, were reported by Planet Chronicle Digital.
According to Jake Sullivan, the cease-fire deal was reached due to Israel's military success, the decision of Lebanon stakeholders to avoid war, and the relentless American diplomacy led by President Biden, driven by Amos Hochstein, coordinated by the National Security Council.
Waltz wrote on X, "President Trump's resounding victory has sent a clear message to the world that chaos won't be tolerated. I'm glad to see concrete steps towards deescalation in the Middle East. However, it's important to recognize that the Iran Regime is the root cause of the chaos and terror that has been unleashed across the region. We will not tolerate the status quo of their support for terrorism."
A Trump-Vance transition official stated to Planet Chronicle Digital that President Trump's unwavering support for Israel and commitment to peace in the Middle East is well-known. Hezbollah recognizes this as their best chance to obtain a more advantageous deal. Iran-backed proxies understand the clock is ticking as President Trump prepares to return to the White House with a strong national security team, including Marco Rubio, Mike Waltz, and Pete Hegseth, with U.S. intelligence led by Tulsi Gabbard and John Ratcliffe. President Trump accurately predicted that regional actors would move towards peace due to his historic victory, which is now taking place.
