The Israeli government is set to finalize a historic cease-fire and hostage release agreement with Hamas, marking a critical step in the war since the Oct. 7, 2023, terrorist attack. The deal, approved by the Israeli security cabinet, will take effect Sunday, with the first three hostages expected to be released. This agreement was the result of weeks of intensive negotiations mediated by the United States, Qatar, and Egypt.

Netanyahu commended Biden and Trump for their contributions to the negotiations and expressed gratitude for Biden's dedication. He also praised Trump's statement that Gaza should never again be a "safe haven for terrorism."

In a podcast interview, Trump stated that his involvement expedited the process, asserting, "We altered the trajectory, and we did it swiftly."

Under the agreement, Hamas will release 33 hostages in the first phase, including women, children, elderly men, and individuals with critical medical needs. Among them are 24-year-old Rumi Gonen, abducted from the Nova music festival, and Shiri Bibas with her two young sons, Ariel and baby Kfir. Families have been notified of the initial releases, while details of subsequent phases will be shared 24 hours prior to implementation.

Of the three Americans reportedly alive in Gaza, only two - Keith Siegel and Sagui Dekel-Chen - are included in the initial phase. Sagui's wife gave birth to their third child while he was imprisoned. Edan Alexander, an Israeli-American soldier, is not included in the list.

Last week, Richard Goldberg, a senior adviser at FDD and former Trump NSC official, stated on Planet Chronicle that leaving Alexander off the initial list would be a significant strategic blunder.

Israel will release hundreds of Palestinian security prisoners, including minors, women, and individuals with health issues. Notable prisoners include Nawal Abd Fattah, a 24-year-old convicted of attempting to stab an Israeli man in 2020, and Ibrahim Zmar, a 15-year-old involved in a 2023 shooting in Jerusalem. Those convicted of leading major terror attacks remain excluded from the deal.

The agreement states that ex-prisoners cannot be re-arrested on the same charges and do not need to sign any declarations upon release. For each woman or child hostage freed, 30 Palestinian prisoners are released, while the release of soldiers results in the release of 30 life-sentenced prisoners and 20 serving long terms.

The deal allows for humanitarian relief in Gaza, with 600 trucks of supplies entering daily. By the 22nd day, displaced Gazans will be allowed to return to northern areas, with security inspections limited to vehicles under Qatari-Egyptian supervision. The Israeli military will reduce its presence in certain areas while maintaining control of key routes.

Groups of three hostages will be released weekly for five weeks, starting with three on the first day and four on the seventh day. On the 35th day, 12 more hostages, including long-held captives Avera Mengistu and Hisham al-Sayed, will be freed.

The second phase of negotiations will commence on the 43rd day of the first stage, with a focus on the release of young men and soldiers and the return of bodies. This phase will last 42 days, with discussions addressing the remaining captives.

President Biden announced during a press conference Wednesday that when phase two begins, there will be an exchange for the remaining living hostages, including male soldiers, and all remaining Israeli forces will be withdrawn from Gaza, making the temporary cease-fire permanent. Additionally, he stated that phase three would involve returning the remains of hostages killed in captivity and initiating a comprehensive reconstruction plan for Gaza.

During a cabinet meeting, Netanyahu emphasized that in his discussions with both President Biden and President-elect Trump, one point was made explicitly clear: If negotiations for the second phase of the agreement fail, Israel will resume military operations.

The agreement brings both hope and heartbreak for the families of hostages. Ronen and Orna Neutra, whose American-Israeli son Omer was killed by Hamas and whose body remains in Gaza, described the deal as bittersweet.

"It's a challenging time. Although we're thrilled for the families who may finally reunite with their loved ones after a prolonged separation, we must also acknowledge the difficulties they've faced," Orna Neutra stated on Planet Chronicle.

"We are optimistic that the new administration will successfully finalize the deal and possess the necessary authority to persuade the various parties in the region to adhere to it. We believe President Trump is committed to this matter and will ensure its success."
