Over 1,000 prisoners were executed in Iran in 2024, marking the highest total in 30 years, according to a report.
Over 12 prisoners were hanged on New Year's Day, accounting for almost half of executions in the last quarter.
In 2024, over 1,000 prisoners were executed in 86 prisons across Iran, according to a report by the NCRI. This represents an increase of 16% from the 864 executions conducted in 2023, and is an unprecedented figure in the past three decades.
The majority of the regime's executions took place in the latter half of the year, with almost 70% occurring after the July election of President Masoud Pezeshkian. Approximately 47% of these executions took place in the fourth quarter of 2024, during a time when the regime faced severe defeats in the region and mounting economic and social crises, according to the NCRI.
Maryam Rajavi, the president-elect of the NCRI, stated that the series of executions are a "desperate attempt to prevent an uprising of an angry populace who will not tolerate anything less than the regime's complete overthrow. These medieval crimes only strengthen the resolve of Iran's youth to overthrow the religious dictatorship."
Rajavi believes that any negotiations or dealings with the regime must be contingent upon the cessation of executions and torture. The leaders of the regime must be held accountable for the 45 years of human rights violations and genocide they have committed.
The Islamic Republic of Iran's permanent mission to the United Nations did not respond to Planet Chronicle Digital's request for comment on the regime's record-breaking number of executions.
According to Behnam Ben Taleblu, a senior fellow at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, the more the regime appears weak abroad, the more it is attempting to intensify its efforts to prevent a contagion effect on the domestic front. This is being achieved through an increase in executions, including of political prisoners, non-violent offenders, and even hostages. Taleblu stated that October witnessed a record number of killings by the clerical regime.
This year, Iran executed 111 prisoners, including 34 women and seven juveniles. Of these, 70 were Afghan nationals. This was a 300% increase from the previous year, according to Amu TV.
The Baluchi minority accounted for 119 of the executed prisoners, according to the NCRI. The United Nations-mandated Independent International Fact-Finding Mission on the Islamic Republic of Iran reported in August 2024 that the Baluchis make up only 2% of the Iranian population. The mission also found that ethnic and religious minorities have been disproportionately impacted by the government's response to the protests that began in September 2022, after Mahsa Amini, a Kurdish woman arrested for not wearing a headscarf, died in Iranian custody.
In 2024, the Iranian regime executed 69-year-old Jamshid Sharmahd, a German citizen and 20-year resident of the United States, who was kidnapped in Dubai in 2020 and charged with "corruption on earth" in a "grossly unfair" trial.
During Christmas, nearly 25 innocent people were executed, equating to almost one execution every 2.5 hours, according to a letter written by 25-year-old political prisoner Saeed Masouri, who shared the information with the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran.
"Masouri writes that from the moment of his sentencing, he considered every meeting to be his last and every "opening and closing" sound of the door as a death knell."
On the first day of 2025, 12 prisoners were hanged at four Iranian prisons, according to the NCRI.
