On Monday, three suspected migrants were apprehended by Mexican authorities for the alleged murder of an immigration agent who requested to examine their identification papers, according to official statements.

Officials reported that two Venezuelan and one Colombian migrants were arrested following an alleged attack on a border agent, who was discovered lifeless earlier in the day, around 30 miles south of the U.S./Mexico border.

According to public security officials with northern Chihuahua state, investigators confirmed that the immigration agent suffered a head injury and was found with no vital signs. Additionally, his body showed "signs of violence."

Luis Alberto Olivas García, who had worked for the immigration agency for 30 years, was identified as the agent.

An unspecified number of foreign nationals were attacked and killed at a checkpoint near Ciudad Juarez, which is located across the border from El Paso, Texas, when the slain agent requested their identification documents, according to the National Migration Institute.

According to the New York Times, citing the Chihuahua security ministry, preliminary reports suggested that the agent sustained several wounds, possibly from a sharp weapon, and a head injury, most likely from a rock.

Earlier on Monday, Olivas García was recognized for his 30 years of service, Armendáriz stated.

The rare case of deadly violence against agents occurred when migrants tried to cross into the U.S. ahead of an impending crackdown on illegal crossings, with President-elect Trump set to be sworn into office.

On Monday, hundreds of U.S.-bound migrants waited in long lines outside an immigration office in southern Mexico, hoping to secure safe passage north and enter the U.S., according to Reuters.

Under the Biden-Harris administration, an unprecedented number of illegal migrants flowed across the U.S. borders.

Trump's second term in office is centered on securing the border and implementing the largest mass deportation program in U.S. history.
