Netanyahu condemns 'Iran's axis of evil' following Jordan border attack that leaves 3 Israelis dead.
Netanyahu condemns the 'terrible' terrorist who killed 3 Israelis at the Allenby Bridge border crossing.
In remarks Sunday following the terrorist attack at the West Bank-Jordan border crossing that resulted in the deaths of three Israelis, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu condemned what he referred to as Iran's "axis of evil."
"Netanyahu began his cabinet meeting on Sunday by expressing his condolences to the families of the three citizens killed in cold blood at the Allenby Bridge by a despicable terrorist. He also condemned the murderous ideology led by Iran's axis of evil, which has resulted in the recent deaths of six hostages and three Israeli police officers. The killers do not discriminate against anyone, as they aim to murder everyone until the last one, regardless of their beliefs or background."
An Israeli military spokesperson stated that a gunman in a truck approached the Allenby Bridge Crossing from the Jordanian side and fired at Israeli security forces, resulting in a shootout that led to the death of the assailant. The Israeli military also announced that the three people killed were Israeli civilians, all of whom were men in their 50s, according to Israel's Magen David Adom rescue service.
Petra News Agency reported that Jordan, a Western-allied Arab country with a significant Palestinian population, is currently investigating the shooting.
Sami Abu Zuhri, a Hamas official, praised the attack and linked it to Israel's actions in Gaza.
According to Reuters, he stated that we can anticipate numerous additional similar actions.
Since the Hamas terrorists killed approximately 1,200 people, mostly civilians, in their Oct. 7 attack into southern Israel, there has been no attack of its kind along the West Bank-Jordan border crossing. Additionally, 250 people were taken as hostages into Gaza, and Hamas is still holding approximately 100 of them. It is believed that around a third of the remaining hostages inside Gaza are dead.
"The strength of Israel and its defense forces, the bravery of its soldiers and security personnel, the sacrifice of its fallen heroes, and the resilience of its people are what prevent the elimination of Israel as in the past," Netanyahu said Sunday. "Our enemies' main goal is to divide us, so they try to sow division within us."
Netanyahu stated that the German newspaper Bild published an official Hamas document detailing its plan of action, which includes sowing division among the population, waging psychological warfare on the families of hostages, exerting internal and external political pressure on the Israeli government, tearing the country apart from within, and continuing the war until Israel's defeat.
"The prime minister stated that the majority of Israeli citizens are not ensnared by Hamas, as they understand the government's unwavering commitment to achieving the objectives of the war, including eliminating Hamas, rescuing hostages, securing Gaza's safety, and allowing residents in the north and south to return home."
"We will stand together, hold on to David's link, and with God's help, we will win," Netanyahu said. "Lastly, some ask, 'Will you forever hold a sword?' In the Middle East, without a sword, there is no eternity."
The Allenby crossing over the Jordan River, commonly referred to as the King Hussein Bridge, is primarily utilized by Palestinians, international tourists, and cargo shipments. Despite a low incidence of security incidents, a tragic event occurred in 2014 when Israeli security guards fatally shot a Jordanian judge who they claimed had attacked them, according to the Associated Press.
Israel and Jordan signed a peace treaty in 1994.
Both Israeli land crossings with Jordan, located near Beit Shean in the north and Eilat in the south, were closed by Israeli authorities until further notice, according to statements from both countries.
