Last year, a Welsh man tragically died in a shocking manner, which was recently determined by British officials.
Officials announced the results of an investigation into the death of Barry Griffiths, 57, who accidentally knifed himself while separating frozen burgers in June 2023. The Western Telegraph reported the incident.
Griffiths, a resident of Llandrindod Wells, accidentally stabbed himself in the stomach while attempting to separate frozen burgers with a knife due to reduced mobility in one arm resulting from a stroke.
Griffiths' body remained in his apartment for several days after his death due to his relatively private life with limited contact with others. It took over a week for police to conduct a wellness check.
On July 4, 2023, the body of Griffiths was discovered in his bed. The Western Telegraph reports that his phone was last active on June 23 and his laptop was used on June 24.
Griffiths suffered from atherosclerosis, which restricted blood flow to his heart and contributed to his death, according to Morgan.
According to Deputy Chief Inspector Jonathan Rees, officials initially believed that Mr. Griffiths' death could have been a suicide or murder. However, after further investigation, they concluded that his death was an accident that only involved him.
"According to Rees, as reported by the Western Telegraph, the bottom drawer of the freezer had been left open and pulled forward to access food items. On the work surface in the kitchen adjacent to the fridge freezer were two uncooked burgers, a knife, and a tea towel."
""At that point, my hypothesis was that Mr Griffiths was trying to cut apart frozen burgers with a knife," he said."
At the hearing, Morgan conveyed to Griffiths' family that she recognized the evidence presented was challenging and distressing to hear.
"I express my condolences at this difficult time," Morgan said, "thank you for your patience while the investigation was ongoing."
