On Tuesday, the U.S. Department of Justice unveiled criminal charges against Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar and other top officials of the terrorist organization for their involvement in the "terrorist atrocities" committed during the Oct. 7, 2023, massacre in Israel.
In New York City, a federal court complaint has been filed against a person accused of conspiring to aid a foreign terrorist group, leading to fatalities.
"In a video address, Attorney General Merrick Garland stated that the charges unsealed today are only one part of the Justice Department's efforts to target all aspects of Hamas' operations. He added that these actions will not be the last and that the Justice Department will continue to pursue the terrorists responsible for murdering Americans and those who illegally provide them with material support for the rest of their lives."
On Oct. 7, 2023, Israel was attacked by Hamas, resulting in the deaths of approximately 1,200 Israelis and the capture of hundreds more hostages.
The recovery of six hostages, including 23-year-old Israeli American Hersh Goldberg-Polin, in the tunnels beneath Rafah in the Gaza Strip led to Tuesday's charges.
