An American national is among the four fatalities in Laos following a suspected case of alcohol poisoning.
Officials confirm the deaths of four individuals, including two Danes, following consumption of contaminated alcohol in Laos.
In Laos, a group of tourists consisting of an American, two Danes, and one Australian died after consuming contaminated alcohol. Reports indicate that several individuals had previously become ill in a town frequented by backpackers.
So far, only the identity of the victim, 19-year-old Bianca Jones from Australia, has been publicly revealed.
On Thursday, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced the death of a 19-year-old Australian woman named Jones, who had been evacuated from Vang Vieng, Laos, for treatment in a Thai hospital. Her friend, also 19, is still hospitalized in neighboring Thailand.
"This is every parent's worst fear and a nightmare that no one should have to endure," Albanese stated, according to The Associated Press. "We also take this moment to express our thoughts for Bianca's friend Holly Bowles, who is battling for her life."
On Wednesday, outside Bangkok Hospital, Shaun Bowles informed reporters that his daughter's condition was critical and she was still on life support.
""We appreciate all the support and love from back home, but we need privacy now to spend as much time as possible with Holly," he said."
Four foreign tourists, including Jones, have died after consuming contaminated alcohol in Australia, according to media reports.
"A police official in Thailand revealed that the cause of death of a woman was methanol poisoning from fake liquor. The physician who examined her stated that the high amount of methanol in her body led to brain swelling."
The governments of Australia and Britain have advised their citizens to exercise caution when consuming drinks in Laos due to the prevalence of counterfeit liquor.
As a solvent, pesticide, and alternative fuel source, methanol is used industrially, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The State Department stated that they were providing consular assistance while local authorities were investigating the case and responsible for providing any details.
Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong urged parents and young people to have a conversation about risks and to inform themselves after receiving news of Jones' death. She also emphasized the importance of working together to prevent such a tragedy from happening again.
The Associated Press and Reuters contributed to this request.
