An American college rape suspect is being extradited to the US.
The US Marshals Service sought Ian Cleary after a 2013 incident in Pennsylvania.
A Pennsylvania college student was allegedly sexually assaulted by a California resident in 2013, and years later, the resident reportedly messaged her on Facebook with the message "So I raped you." The resident is now being extradited back to the U.S. on Thursday.
Today at Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris, France, Ian Cleary, who was wanted by the U.S. Marshals Service, was handed over to American authorities, according to prosecutors.
In April, a man from Saratoga, California, was detained in Metz after a three-year search. He has been held in custody pending extradition proceedings since his arrest. The Appeal Court in Metz ruled in July that he could be extradited.
In 2013, a 20-year-old Gettysburg College student was accused of stalking an 18-year-old student at a party, entering her dorm and sexually assaulting her while she texted friends for help. He did not return to campus after the incident.
Shannon Keeler, the accuser, underwent a rape examination on the same day. She collected witnesses and evidence and spent years pushing officials to file charges. In 2021, she returned to the authorities after discovering Facebook messages that appeared to be from Cleary's account.
The sender confessed to raping the recipient in a series of messages.
"I promise never to do it to anyone again," "I need to hear your voice," and "I will pray for you" were some of the other messages.
The Facebook account used to send the messages was verified by police, according to the June 2021 warrant. It is alleged that Cleary sent the messages in 2020 while Keeler and her boyfriend were on a weekend trip.
In 2023, Keeler's attorney and legal director for the Pennsylvania Coalition Against Rape, Andrea Levy, stated that her client had to "persistently put herself out there" while Cleary continued with his life.
"Levy stated that it is difficult to quantify the impact on her as a human being and her family, partner, and there is a real human cost, which is the loss of someone's life."
According to his blog, Gettysburg College alumnus went on to graduate from Santa Clara University, worked for Tesla, then moved to France for several years, where he self-published medieval fiction.
The Pennsylvania Coalition Against Rape declined to comment on a request for comment from Planet Chronicle Digital on Thursday.
