After a substantial victory in the British general election, Keir Starmer has been named the new prime minister.
Rishi Sunak, the Conservative leader, expressed regret to his party members over the significant loss and change in authority.
After the Labor Party's victory in the general election on Thursday, Keir Starmer will become the new prime minister of the United Kingdom, according to the Associated Press.
Rishi Sunak, the Conservative prime minister since October 2022, will be unseated by Starmer, leader of the Labour Party, who won a majority of votes to secure the position.
Starmer, set to be the first Labour prime minister in 14 years, stated his intention to prioritize the country over the party.
"Starmer stated that returning politics to public service is necessary, emphasizing that his new position comes with great responsibility."
The House of Commons experienced one of its largest victories ever with the Labour Party's win on Thursday.
The British people delivered a "sobering verdict" during a concession speech, and Prime Minister Sunak took responsibility for the loss.
""I am sorry for the loss of many good, hard-working Conservative candidates who lost tonight, despite their tireless efforts, local records and delivery, and dedication to their communities. I take responsibility for the loss," Sunak said."
Keir Starmer has been congratulated on his victory by Sunak.
"Peacefully and orderly, power will be transferred today with goodwill on all sides. This should instill confidence in our country's stability and future, as stated by Sunak," said the Prime Minister.
According to the Associated Press, King Charles III is expected to grant Starmer permission to form a new government on Friday.
The Labour Party won the election with 326 seats, while Sunak conceded the election 30 minutes before the result was announced.
The Australian Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese, expressed his excitement to collaborate with the new government, while New Zealand Prime Minister, Christopher Luxon, thanked Rishi Sunak for his service to his country and his friendship towards New Zealand.
Liz Truss, the former British Prime Minister, lost both her premiership and her lawmaker's seat in the election after serving for only 49 days.
Truss lost her Norfolk South West seat by a few hundred votes.
Numerous other prominent Conservative politicians, including House of Commons leader Penny Mordaunt, also lost their seats.
In the House of Commons, the Labour Party secured 410 seats while the Conservatives obtained 118 seats.
Since Margaret Thatcher assumed leadership of the Conservative Party in 1979, the party has held power all but 13 years until the present day.
