Palestinian Authority leader declares war against Hamas ideology in West Bank.
According to a report, a Palestinian Authority (PA) official predicted that President-elect Donald Trump will "destroy Iran" and that Tehran's weakening will effectively break down the remaining Hamas terror cells.
According to the New York Post, Mohammad Hamdan, the secretary-general of the Fatah Party, made comments about the ongoing security operations against Hamas-aligned extremists in Jenin during a meeting with other top PA leaders in Nablus on December 19.
Hamas' ideology is the issue, according to Hamdan, who stated that the problem lies with Hamas' ties to regimes beyond Palestine, specifically Iran. The Post first reported the conversation on Monday.
"Trump and the Israeli government are planning to destroy Iran, which means Hamas followers will have no other choice but to become Palestinians," he stated.
On Dec. 6, a group of over a dozen extremists stole two PA vehicles and paraded them down the streets of Jenin while waving Hamas and ISIS flags, according to the Post.
The PA has killed at least three extremists in the West Bank town and has vowed to eliminate the remaining people responsible.
The 2006 election resulted in a major defeat for Fatah, which led to Hamas seizing control of the Gaza Strip and intensifying Islamic extremist rule, as well as launching numerous attacks on Israel.
The PA, backed by the U.S. and other Western governments, is preparing to take control of Gaza once the war with Hamas ends.
"Hamas rejects international legitimacy, meaning UN resolutions," Hamdan stated. "The world cannot tolerate a situation where a party refuses to adhere to international resolutions."
The PA has been accused by Hamas and other Islamic extremist groups of collaborating with Israel on past security operations in Jenin, resulting in distrust among these groups.
Jenin, a long-standing terrorist stronghold, has been heavily targeted by the Jewish state in the past. However, the PA security forces have recently increased their presence in the area with new security operations this month.
An Israeli official has disclosed the secret to defeating Hezbollah, resulting in the death of at least three Palestinian Authority (PA) security force members, including a captain in the intelligence services, during clashes with extremists, according to The Associated Press. The PA has also arrested dozens of individuals.
The leaders of the Palestinian Authority condemned Israel's increased settlements in the West Bank but supported the Jewish state's right to exist, according to the Post.
According to Hamdan, PA President Abbas, who criticized Israel and the US before the UN General Assembly, still supports realistic relations with the Americans to achieve the aspirations of the Palestinians. However, the secretary-general contended that the US's failed foreign policy in the Middle East has contributed to the rise of Islamic extremism.
"According to Hamdan, the U.S. declared the rebels in Syria to be al Qaeda, and then an American delegation visited Syria. Prior to that, when the Americans struck deals with the Taliban in Afghanistan, Palestinians believed that most extremist Islamic groups were created by America as part of its effort to create a new Middle East."
An Israeli official stated to the Post that the PA could still be a viable option for post-war Gaza governance, but only if it addresses "corruption" and "terrorism" funding towards Israeli settlers in the West Bank.
The official acknowledged that the PA could have a "historically unprecedented opportunity" to regain control of the Palestinian territories.
The Israeli official stated that the PA's opposition to Hamas could provide a unique opportunity to participate in day-after talks.
The Associated Press contributed to this report.
