A woman was apprehended for trying to transport 22 pounds of meth concealed in Christmas presents inside her carry-on luggage.
Smugglers cannot conceal during the busy travel season, officials stated.
In a New Zealand airport, observant officers discovered $2 million worth of methamphetamine hidden in Christmas presents that a Canadian woman tried to conceal.
On December 8, a 29-year-old woman arrived at Auckland International Airport in New Zealand on a flight from Vancouver with illicit drugs in her carry-on bag, according to a release from the New Zealand Customs Service.
The woman was questioned by officers and her carry-on duffle bag was searched upon landing. They found more than 22 pounds of methamphetamine hidden beneath snowflake wrapping paper.
The Canadian national's bag was found to contain more than $2 million U.S. dollars worth of an illicit drug, according to officials.
The incident at Auckland Airport was a "typical effort by international criminal organizations" to take advantage of the busy travel season, according to Paul Williams, the airport manager.
"Although a busy airport does not necessarily mean Customs is not attentive to potential drug risks, Williams emphasized that the airport teams are composed of diligent officers who are intensely focused on detecting and preventing harm to New Zealand."
Since her arrest, the woman has been charged with importing and possessing a Class A controlled drug in district court.
"Our Canadian partners and we are working more collaboratively to disrupt criminal gangs and the importation of drugs, including through the passenger stream, as stated by Williams in an email to Planet Chronicle Digital. However, Customs is unable to provide any additional information due to the ongoing nature of the investigation."
Authorities said the woman has been taken into custody.
