A school bus driver was arrested for allegedly abducting a girl and keeping her captive for 12 years.
The young girl, kidnapped at the age of seven, was allegedly subjected to psychological manipulation and sexual assault, according to Colombian prosecutors.
Earlier this year, a 7-year-old girl escaped from a Colombian school bus driver who allegedly abducted her and held her captive for more than a decade, prosecutors have revealed.
Carlos Humberto Grisales Higuita, the suspect, has been charged with simple kidnapping, sexual abuse of a minor under 14 years old, sexual acts with a minor under 14 years old, and pornography with a person under 18 years old, as per prosecutors in Medellín, Colombia.
"In early 2012, a school bus driver, who was a man, allegedly detained a 7-year-old girl and took her to a house in the city center. Prosecutors claimed that he manipulated her psychologically and sexually assaulted her, making her believe that such behavior was normal."
During her captivity, the victim's name was altered, she was transported to different structures in Medellín and Bello, and she was prevented from attending school, according to investigators.
Prosecutors stated that when the girl turned 16, she lodged a complaint against the accused perpetrator regarding the mistreatment she experienced. In response, she was allegedly imprisoned in a house. However, she was able to break free in February of this year.
They also said the victim had initially been reported missing 12 years ago.
"According to prosecutors, Grisales Higuita was arrested by the National Police in Medellín but did not accept the charges brought by the Prosecutor's Office during the preliminary hearings."
Grisales Higuita remains held in custody by local authorities.
