A deadly accident occurred at a presidential campaign rally in Mexico when a strong gust of wind caused the stage to collapse.
Nuevo Leon Gov. Samuel García reported that at least nine people were killed, including a child, and 63 were injured.
On Wednesday evening, a strong gust of wind caused the stage to collapse at a campaign rally in northern Mexico, resulting in the deaths of at least nine people and injuries to dozens more.
The rally for long-shot presidential candidate Jorge Álvarez Máynez was held in Nuevo Leon, Mexico, according to The Associated Press. Máynez later announced that he was in good condition after being hospitalized following the incident.
He announced that he has suspended upcoming campaign events and stated that the victims will not face this tragedy alone.
"At this moment, the only crucial matter is to attend to the accident victims," he stated.
At least nine people, including a child, were killed and 63 were injured, according to Nuevo Leon Gov. Samuel García, who is a leading member of Máynez’s Citizens Movement party.
He too shared a video message requesting residents in the vicinity to remain indoors for the following two hours owing to the weather conditions.
The AP reported that videos from the rally showed Máynez waving his arm and the crowd chanting his name. Suddenly, he noticed a giant screen and metal structure falling towards him. Quickly, he ran towards the back of the stage to avoid being hit by the falling structure.
According to The AP, many campaign attendees, including those who were screaming, could be seen running away or climbing out from under collapsed metal poles.
Claudia Sheinbaum and Xóchitl Gálvez, who are leading the country's presidential race, have sent their condolences after the tragic event, while Máynez, who is polling third, has been trailing behind.
In solidarity with the victims and their families, Sheinbaum, the leader, canceled a Thursday campaign event in Monterrey.
Gálvez expressed his condolences and prayers for the families of the deceased and wished for a speedy recovery to those injured on social media.
Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador expressed sympathy, stating that he "sends a hug to family members, friends of the victims and political supporters."
Presidential, state, and municipal elections will take place in Mexico on June 2, marking the peak of the country's campaign season.
The deadly weather event on Wednesday night was not the only challenge faced by the campaign season, as it was also marked by the killings of approximately two dozen candidates running for local offices.
