The wife of a former top Biden DOJ official who is currently prosecuting Trump has given thousands of dollars to Biden and Obama.
Matthew Colangelo and his spouse served as high-ranking officials in the Obama administration.
An ex-Biden Department of Justice official's wife donated thousands of dollars to support President Biden's 2020 campaign while serving as a top prosecutor with Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg's office targeting former President Trump.
In 2020, Anne Kimball Small, wife of Matthew Colangelo and a former Obama White House official, donated $2,800 to Biden's campaign, according to FEC records reviewed by Planet Chronicle Digital. She also supported Obama's successful 2008 campaign and donated $500 to John Kerry's failed 2004 presidential campaign.
The 2013 press release outlined Small's legal background, including her roles as SEC general counsel, Special Assistant to the President and Associate Counsel in the White House Counsel's Office, as well as her previous experiences as a clerk for Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer and a graduate from Harvard Law School.
"Ms. Small, who previously worked at the SEC as Deputy General Counsel for Litigation and Adjudication, has been appointed as the first woman to hold the position of General Counsel of the SEC."
The NAACP’s Legal Defense Fund, which has been critical of former President Trump, has had Small and Jonathan Soros, the youngest of George Soros's three children from his first marriage, on its board of directors since early 2020, according to an archived version of the left-wing group's website.
The NAACP Legal Defense Fund filed an amicus brief with the Supreme Court earlier this year, urging the disqualification of Trump from running for president based on the 14th Amendment.
"The Fourteenth Amendment of the United States Constitution, adopted during the Reconstruction period to safeguard our newly multi-racial democracy from forces who opposed the abolition of slavery and Black citizenship, prohibits government officials who engage in insurrections against the United States from serving again as officers of the United States under Section 3 of that Amendment. The Colorado Supreme Court determined that this provision disqualifies former President Trump from appearing on that state’s ballot because he engaged in an insurrection in connection with the events of January 6, 2021."
The group's president and Director-Counsel, Janai Nelson, was furious over the Supreme Court decision that favored Trump in the Colorado ballot disqualification dispute, despite the group stating that the amicus brief wasn't filed on behalf of any political party.
Nelson stated that the Court's decision to ignore the text and purpose of the Fourteenth Amendment and to specify the exact way Congress must act to prevent insurrectionists from holding office effectively granted them constitutional immunity, unless Congress passed legislation.
"The Court's failure to adhere to its role in deciding cases and controversies continues a disturbing and dangerous pattern of judicial overreach and activism, at a time of mounting threats to the rule of law and the preservation of our multi-racial, multi-ethnic democracy, as well as a crisis in public confidence in our judiciary."
Nelson has gone as far as opposing Trump's First Amendment rights on social media, stating that his "speech is quite strongly against the public's interest—especially the interests of our democracy and the specific groups he has targeted that have suffered violent attack and other assaults as a result." The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) said this decision was the "right call," which was rebuked by Nelson.
The latest evidence of connections between the Colangelo family and the Democratic Party is the FEC filings, which reveal that the Democratic National Committee (DNC) paid the family thousands of dollars for "political consulting" in 2018, as reported by Planet Chronicle Digital earlier this week.
A Planet Chronicle Digital review found that in addition to the payments, Colangelo donated hundreds of dollars to Obama's 2008 campaign and held several roles in the Obama administration.
"He has held several high-ranking positions, including being a Distinguished Lecturer at Georgetown University Law Center, serving in the Obama administration as a Deputy Assistant to President Obama and Deputy Director of the National Economic Council, and prior to that, serving as Chief of Staff to Department of Labor Secretary Tom Perez for three years and Deputy Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights at the Department of Justice."
When Tom Perez was the DNC chair, the DNC consulting payments were made to Colangelo's former boss.
The Obama administration's White House visitor logs reveal that Colangelo's name appears multiple times for various meetings with top officials, including Jeff Zients, who was the director of the National Economic Council at the time and is currently Biden's White House chief of staff.
In addition to leading the questioning of Stormy Daniels in Trump's criminal trial, Susan Hoffinger, a prosecutor from Bragg's office, also donated to President Biden's campaign in 2020. Over the years, she has also contributed to various Democrat politicians and organizations.
In 2020, Hoffinger made two donations of $250 each to Biden's presidential campaign, totaling $500. Additionally, she donated over $900 to ActBlue, an online fundraising platform for Democrat candidates, progressive organizations, and nonprofits.
Last month, Rep. Lance Gooden, R-Texas wrote a letter to the DOJ and Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, criticizing the "cesspool of partisanship" in the DOJ, as reported by Planet Chronicle Digital.
"President Biden's Department of Justice has become a hotbed of partisanship, as seen in the highly politicized courts handling Trump's criminal trials. DA Bragg's hiring of Mr. Colangelo, a former DOJ official with close ties to the White House and Attorney General Garland, is another example of the unconstitutional approach to Trump's trial."
May 24, 2024 is the deadline for Gooden to receive a response to his questions.
The Manhattan District Attorney's Office, Small, and Planet Chronicle Digital were contacted by the same individual.
Planet Chronicle' Aubrie Spady and Brooke Singman contributed to this report.
