Pastor who advised gay people to feel 'uncomfortable' in their 'sin' commended by Harris.
Jamal Bryant, a senior pastor, donated $500 to the Harris campaign in July and stated that Black leaders are rallying an army to support her.
On Sunday, Kamala Harris, the Democratic presidential nominee and Vice President, attended a mega church led by a controversial pastor in a crucial swing state. There, she expressed gratitude for his "leadership" and stated that she was honored to be present to "celebrate" his accomplishments.
Jamal H. Bryant, the senior pastor of New Birth Missionary Baptist Church in Georgia, has repeatedly praised the antisemitic Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan and said gay people should feel "uncomfortable" in their "sin."
Bryant, who referred to Harris as an "American hero" and "voice of the future," addressed the congregation and stated that their unborn grandchildren will one day inquire about their whereabouts on the day of the church service. He urged them to make some noise in honor of their "fearless leader."
"Harris thanked Pastor Bryant for his leadership during a 20-minute speech at New Birth. The two had previously discussed their initial meeting 20 years ago at a gathering of rising stars in the country, where they talked about their roles and responsibilities as leaders."
She added, "It's great to be with you this morning to celebrate your achievements with this remarkable congregation."
A week after President Biden announced he wouldn't run for re-election, Bryant, who had previously donated $500 to the Harris campaign, has been a vocal supporter and said earlier this summer that he and other Black leaders were "mobilizing an army" in support of her campaign.
During his sermon, Bryant stated, "It was a sister who raised you and taught you how to read. A true man supports a woman. You were born for this moment, specifically for Harris."
Although Bryant's endorsement of Harris may benefit her campaign, his previous inflammatory remarks could resurface and harm her chances.
Bryant interviewed Farrakhan in 2015 and praised him as one of the greatest leaders of their people, despite Farrakhan's long history of espousing antisemitic rhetoric, including calling Jews "wicked" and comparing them to termites.
""We are honored to welcome the esteemed Minister Louis Farrakhan to the Word Network and the world. We are grateful for the opportunity to have you, sir, and to mark history as living in the same era as one of the greatest leaders of our people," Bryant said while introducing him."
In a 2019 tweet, Bryant expressed his "humility" when in Farrakhan's presence. His Twitter account contains numerous other tweets about Farrakhan.
In 2012, Bryant spoke at the Baltimore Empowerment Temple and stated that homosexuality is a sin, but not the only one, and it is the responsibility of the community to make gay people and other sinners uncomfortable in their sin.
Obama was criticized by a pastor for supporting gay marriage and not giving a warning to Black pastors, causing them to feel betrayed. The pastor labeled Obama as "Black and wrong" and "Black and out of order" in his sermon.
Harris has consistently advocated for gay rights and her campaign website states that she will forever safeguard the right to openly and proudly love whoever you love.
"In 2004, she presided over some of the country's first same-sex marriages and, as Attorney General, she refused to defend California's anti-marriage equality statewide referendum. Her campaign website stated that as President, she would work to pass the Equality Act, which would protect LGBTQI+ Americans from discrimination in healthcare, housing, and education, among other areas."
In her speech at Bryant's church, Harris acknowledged her hometown pastor and mentor, Rev. Amos Brown, who was present at the service. She praised his wisdom and called him a "source of comfort and solace for me for so many years."
During the church service, Brown, who has faced criticism for previous remarks, including accusing the United States of the September 11th attacks and defending Obama's pastor Jeremiah Wright, made comments.
During his prayer, Brown implored God to communicate with every Black male, urging them to recognize the disrespect they show to those who fought for the right to vote by not voting. He also asked God to make it clear that trampling on the graves of those who sacrificed their lives for this right is unacceptable.
"Thank you, God, for this day that we pray for our member and your servant, Kamala Harris. May she know that she moves around this nation, and you will guide her, protect her, and enable her to say, 'I will make the darkness light before thee, and what is wrong, I know you will make it right before me and all my battles I will fight before thee.'"
Neither New Birth Missionary Baptist Church nor the Harris campaign responded to Planet Chronicle Digital's request for comment.
