If Vice President Kamala Harris wins the presidential election on Tuesday, her longtime pastor and mentor could play a crucial role in the reparations movement on the federal level.

Rev. Amos Brown, who has made several controversial comments, including blaming the United States for the 9/11 terrorist attacks, was appointed by California's Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom to serve as the vice chair of the state's reparations task force in 2021 and has called for a reparations push on the federal level.

In 2022, Brown organized a church event called "Solidarity for Reparations," featuring the controversial Rev. Frederick Douglass Haynes III.

Harris, who has been on this journey with Brown from the beginning, introduced Haynes as the "right man to come and inspire us, inform us, and ensure that we have the map to implement reparations in the here and now."

"Haynes stated at Brown's church, "America, you owe us. What you have done to us has been immoral, evil, unjust, and wrong. The only way to bring salvation to America is to pay us what you owe us. I come to you today, San Francisco, California, Texas, United States of America, to say that if you want salvation in this house, you must engage in reparations.""

Brown praised Haynes' comments, saying, "What a wonder. What a word. What a challenge." He then addressed the San Francisco reparations task force, urging them to implement what Haynes had said in a way that was both undescribable and inspiring. Brown assured the crowd that they would receive information and inspiration, and now it was time for implementation.

Last year, during an event, Brown characterized those who oppose reparations as "heartless."

"He stated that if anyone says "Y'all don't deserve nothing. Stop complaining. Pull yourself up by your bootstraps," they are heartless and ignorant of the universal dictum found in all world religions, which is "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.""

Brown cautioned activists against assigning a monetary value to reparations, stating that some of the figures he has encountered are "irrational" or "unrealistic" and could result in them becoming "stuck in a quagmire and a skunk fight." However, Brown added that if other groups are receiving funding from the government, then "what's good for the goose is good for the gander."

""The long years of inaction have led to an increase in the interest in addressing the sin bill committed against Black people, as stated by Brown to Planet Chronicle Digital last year," said Brown."

This year, Harris has been asked about reparations several times, but she has not fully endorsed them and instead believes the matter should be studied.

""I am running to be president for all Americans. While I acknowledge the disparities that exist and their historical context, my agenda includes studying reparations as a first step," Harris stated in a recent interview with Charlamagne Tha God."

In September, while talking to members of the National Association of Black Journalists, she was questioned about establishing a commission to study reparations. However, she evaded the question and proposed that "Congress ultimately has the power to do this work."

During her unsuccessful 2019 presidential bid, Kamala Harris expressed her belief that Black Americans are owed some form of reparations.

She would lead a national conversation on reparations for Black people, including addressing undiagnosed and untreated trauma, and sign H.R. 40 bill if it passed and came across her desk.

Several Black activists and advocacy groups supporting Harris' presidential campaign have openly called for reparations and would likely play a role in a national push.

The longtime president of the U.S. Black Chambers, Ron Busby, has frequently advocated for reparations and has expressed frustration over the lack of conversation about the issue. In 2020, Busby expressed his frustration, stating, "If you can write a $2 trillion check to small businesses affected by a pandemic, you can certainly have a conversation about reparations."

""Busby has praised Harris as an 'extraordinary leader' who displays 'courageous leadership.' As a result, the conversation is now taking place on the table," said Busby."

Busby, who frequently visits the Biden-Harris White House, has also advocated for reparations through his Black Chambers organization. The group's 2023 "BLACKprint" calls for providing "reparations through investment and demonstrate a commitment to uplift Black enterprises."

"The growing discussion around reparations indicates a renewed commitment to enter a new chapter in race relations, but it comes at a time when rhetoric and action threaten to deepen division. The group's annual report stated that the concept of reparations is less a monetary payment and more a dedication to an expansion and implementation of the priorities of this document when paired with intentional, growth, and equity-driven policies for Black businesses."

In July, Harris hosted an exclusive reception at her private residence in partnership with U.S. Black Chambers, Inc., and Busby attended, stating that the reception was a "powerful acknowledgment of the remarkable progress Black business leaders have achieved in shaping our nation’s economic landscape."

The Black Voters Matters Fund, which received $150,000 from the Harris campaign on Sept. 19 and has been campaigning for Harris, has consistently advocated for reparations.

""Compensation is necessary for acknowledging the sacrifices made by our ancestors in building this country," Black Voters Matters Fund stated in May. In a previous post, the group emphasized the importance of reparations in achieving a more just and equitable future."

Latosha Brown, the co-founder of the group, has frequently visited the Biden-Harris White House and has consistently posted about their reparations push. In a 2021 X post, she revealed that she has been working on the issue for 27 years.

Rev. Michael McBride, a member of the Black Church PAC board, has advocated for reparations and praised a $15 trillion plan proposed by Jennifer Epps-Addison.

Tamika Mallory, a disgraced leader of the Women's March, who has been working with the Black Church PAC in Georgia, Pennsylvania, and North Carolina, recently defended Harris against criticism that she does not support reparations enough, stating that she has heard Harris say repeatedly that she supports reparations.

Jamal Bryant, a pastor and board member, posted on Instagram last month about a "monumental moment" when he and another pastor walked from Baltimore to the White House to "bring attention to the administration that black people deserve #reparations for 400 years of oppression."

"We are the only marginalized group in America that hasn't been compensated," he stated. "We went 42 miles because we never got 40 acres! Even if it's not on the ballot, it needs to be on the agenda!"

Harris recently praised Bryant while visiting his Georgia-based megachurch last month.

The Harris campaign and Rev. Brown were contacted by Planet Chronicle Digital for comment.
