A letter uncovered shows that Walz bragged about Minnesota hosting multiple high-ranking Chinese officials.
The Minnesota International Chinese School amplified the letter.
In a letter uncovered by Planet Chronicle Digital, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, the Democratic vice presidential nominee, bragged about Minnesota hosting several prominent Chinese leaders.
The Minnesota International Chinese School highlighted a 2021 letter from Walz on its YouTube channel to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the school's Chinese New Year.
"Minnesota has a longstanding relationship with the people of China, as evidenced by the state's promotion of Minnesota's connections with China and its hosting of numerous senior Chinese leaders for decades. Additionally, thousands of Minnesotans claim ancestral connections to China, which has helped foster numerous ties between Minnesota and China."
"The ties between our two peoples are expanding quickly due to growth in education, trade, and investment opportunities, he stated before congratulating the school on a significant milestone and emphasizing the importance of teaching language learners and future leaders the significance of being multilingual and global citizens."
The meeting between Walz and Jian earlier this year discussing "China-U.S. relations and sub-national cooperation" has been under scrutiny in recent weeks.
The Biden administration's DNI's 2022 report revealed that U.S.-based Chinese consulates, like the one Walz met with, actively participate in foreign influence operations on behalf of the CCP.
Since Vice President Harris chose him to join her Democratic ticket as the vice presidential nominee, Walz's decades-long ties to China have resurfaced, as he had worked briefly in China as a teacher in 1989, teaching English and American history in Guangdong.
Initially, it was thought that Walz had made many trips to China, but a campaign spokesperson later corrected this and stated that he had made about 15 visits, including his honeymoon in 1994.
In an interview with Agri-Pulse Communications, Walz stated that he has lived in China and has been there approximately 30 times. He disagrees with the notion that China needs an adversarial relationship and believes that there are many areas of cooperation that can be worked on. Walz emphasized the need to stand firm on China's actions in the South China Sea, but also acknowledged the importance of finding common ground.
During a 1991 school lesson, he defended the Chinese Communist system, stating that it promotes equality and communal sharing.
"The construction worker and the doctor receive the same benefits from their respective employers, including housing and 14 kg of rice per month."
In 1990, Walz was quoted by a local outlet reflecting on his visits to China, stating, "I will never be treated that well again. They gave me more gifts than I could bring home. It was an excellent experience," Walz said, adding that he had been "treated exceptionally well."
A DHS official raised concerns to colleagues about how Harris' selection of Walz as her running mate could aid the PRC's efforts to influence U.S. policy through their collaboration with him and local government.
"The message reads, "Walt has the VP," with the sender's identity redacted. "You all have no idea how this feeds into what PR has been doing here with him and local gov.""
The official stated, "The intel indicates that targeting someone who is perceived as able to reach DC is a serious matter."
On Tuesday, House Oversight Committee Chair James Comer wrote a letter to Mayorkas, stating that the Committee is releasing a message as an example of communications within DHS's possession, in which DHS officials expressed concern about the CCP targeting politicians and their influence operations at the state and local levels, particularly regarding Governor Walz's influence operations.
Walz has been criticized for his affiliation with a Minnesota-based medical research institute that frequently collaborates with a company classified by the Pentagon as a "Chinese military company" and has connections to Chinese officials with questionable ties to the CCP.
In 2014, the institute welcomed a delegation from China led by Wang Yanling, the vice governor of Henan Province and a Communist Party doctor. Yanling has held several positions in the Chinese Communist Party over many decades.
According to an archived version of the Henan Cancer Institute's website, several members of the Chinese Communist Party have served on its board of directors.
